About the Author
Caroline Fohlin has served as Research Professor of Economics at The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, since 2005. She previously taught at the California Institute of Technology from 1994 to 2004. Professor Fohlin's research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Economic History, the Review of Finance, Business History, Cliometrica, Explorations in Economic History and the Economic History Review. She is the author of Finance Capitalism and Germany's Rise to Industrial Power (Cambridge University Press, 2007) and is a research associate at the Center for Japan-US Business and Economic Studies at the Stern School of Business, New York University. Professor Fohlin gave the Bundesbank Lectures in Banking and Finance at the University of Freiburg in 2007 and received the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in 2005.

The Ideological Origins of the British Empire

David Armitage’s Ideological Origins of the British Empire argues that commercialism, not religion or contractarian theories, influenced the ultimate political ideology of the British Empire. He posits that only the unifying nature of successful trade and cooperation, as opposed to vying religious convictions and interpretations of natural law in politics, could unite Britons into an empire. Noting the fractious nature of the three kingdoms, religiously and politically at odds with one another, he asserts the Empire "was, above all and beyond all other such politics, Protestant, commercial, maritime and free." (p. 8) The process of imperialization was ad hoc, often unplanned and organic in its expansion. Hence, the Empire came to exist before Britons recognized it. For example, Armitage argues that trade provided a more immediate bond than the shared monarchy did between Scotland and England. (p. 40) He writes that, "the vernacular language of British imperial ideology - of 'Great Britain,' 'empire' and 'colony' - was forged in the context of Anglo-Scottish relations in the 1540s" by English and Scottish writers associated with Henry VIII and Protector Somerset (Edward Seymour). (p. 38) Within these sixteenth-century English and Scottish tracts were emphases on a growing commercial empire, with Protestant and maritime traditions as the only shared characteristics between the two kingdoms. In short, Armitage complicates the historiography of the eighteenth century by asserting that the Empire arose haphazardly through commercial interactions predating the religious discourses and political upheavals of seventeenth century.

This book is a wonderful start to anyone wanting to look at the idea of the Gothic. I'm a graduate student in English, and this book has been a great tool in helping me with my course work. The book gives you a good overview of the various types and periods of Gothic, including the more modern topics such as films and video games. It is a good starting off point that can help direct your scholarship in the right direction, as well as making you literate as to what exactly the Gothic is and where it has been. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
E. J. Hannan (1921 1994) was Professor of Statistics at the Australian National University in Canberra. He was a pioneer of modern time series analysis and winner of both the Pitman Medal and the Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal. The Australian Academy of Sciences commemorates his work by awarding the Hannan Medal every two years to recognise achievements of Australians in pure mathematics, applied and computational mathematics and statistical science.

Excellent Frequency Estimation Algorithm Presentation.

I was pleasantly surprised when i saw the title of this book for the first time; I couldn't even find an article dedicated explicitely to Frequency Tracking Algorithms, let alone a whole book! Specifically, i was looking for a reasonably good presentation of frequency detection algorithms to help me extract frequencies from voice signals. I am no programming wizzard, so i restrict myself to Matlab. This book gives a very strong and to the point intro and then it gives you the exact amount of mathematical explanation to understand each algorithm, what it can do, how it does it, and - maybe most importantly - its limitations. If you are working with Matlab, the programs given in an Appendix at the end are really helpfull. I recommend this book to anyone who is doing research involving Frequency Estimation. It is really one of a kind and i, for one, would like to see a second edition with more algorithms (and possibly more programs!).

The ONLY reference for Frequency Estimation and Tracking

Barry Quinn and Ted Hannan are statisticians with a longstanding interest in periodic signals.
As someone who has worked with Barry (although, unfortunately, not Ted), I think this book is worth the money. Barry is a statistician, so he "talks funny" from this engineer's viewpoint. However, the book starts off relatively easily in Chapter 1 and builds up to some very rigorous, but very applicable mathematics. While Barry is currently professor of statistics at UMIST in Manchester, he spent much time working in defence (with a 'c') research labs on sonar signal processing problems --- so he has worked on some of the toughest real-world* problems in signal processing.
* If that's applicable to the defence industry or the defense industry**.
** In my experience, the "real-world" is always somewhere where you ain't.

I am writing this review to counter the previous anonymous review, and as there does not appear to be an author's review page. Forgive me for giving 5 stars, but I would hardly have given it none! This book is meant for those interested in algorithms for frequency estimation, and the statistical behaviour/performance of these algorithms. It necessarily contains lots of nice equations, as these are needed to understand the problems and solutions properly. It is not meant to be bedtime reading. Seventeen pages of useful Matlab code would seem pretty generous to me - the book is not a Matlab Primer. My programs are also available from my web page.
These are corrected versions of the ones in the book (there were a few typos).
