This original work explores the politics of British taxation in the twentieth century. By 1979, taxes were taken from almost half of the total national income, and contributed to the political rise of Margaret Thatcher. But the level of taxation had risen from 10% in 1914 to about 25% between the wars, without provoking serious discontent (as in other European countries). It also grew again during the Second World War. This study explores the reasons that the earlier tax increases were accepted, and not those of 1979.

An ambitous topic but needs more work

This is one of the most challenging books on the French Revolution that I have read. It is very well written and takes a unique viewpoint. The idea is that the French Revolution happened within a context that influenced events across the world. Stone tackles a very big thesis in a small number of pages and overall does a nice job. I feel a lot more explaining could have been done but this is an idea that bears more work. If you are interested in the French revolution this is a great book to get you thinking about its impact. It is not for beginners. This is for those who have read and understood all the events of the French Revolution.

Ambitious title, limited content

I read the book a year ago. It is not totally bad, but the perspective is not global at all, merely European and focusing on political aspects, not on social, economic, or any other factor. Given its title, I was disappointed (with a more humble name, it would be a fine book).

In terms of scope, this book builds upon Stone's previous work (Genesis of the French Revolution) in that it attempts to place some of the root causes of the French Revolution into the context of European balance of power politics in the 18th Century. Particularly important is the issue of war, without which, Stone argues, the collapse of the French monarchy is not possible. Good companion text to Georges Lefebvre's work in terms of balancing a reader's perspective and drawing attention to issues outside of class warfare and the burgeoning identity of the bourgeoisie.

Nice Short Commentary

The following comments pertain to Victor Matthews' commentary on Judges and Ruth published as part of the New Cambridge Bible Commentary series. For those unfamiliar with the author Matthews is a well known American Old Testament scholar. His exegesis is from a mainstream modern perspective.

I particularly enjoyed the text's brevity. While there is demand for detailed technical commentaries, this short work is a nice change of pace. And, though it lacks the exhaustive technical notes that characterize contemporary biblical study it exemplifies first rate scholarship and solid analysis.

Strengths include:
* Good introductions that provide essential context;
* Concise, clear and readable prose well suited for the lay reader;
* Partially annotated bibliography (texts grouped into different subject headings) and recommendations for further specific reading;

Overall, this is a nice short commentary. I recommend it for readers seeking a high quality and concise overview of Judges and Ruth. After this experience with the New Cambridge Bible Commentaries I am encouraged to look at other instalments in the series.

This book will take a different approach from the others I recently bought on the biblical book of Ruth. I know some of Victor Matthews' other work and I expect this to be very good and solid biblical scholarship.

About the Author
Erland M. Schulson completed his PhD at the University of British Columbia, and is the George Austin Colligan Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College, USA. He has worked on physical metallurgy, materials science and ice mechanics in laboratories and universities in Canada, France, USA and UK. He has served as a Fellow of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society and of ASM International, and been listed in ISI as a highly cited researcher in materials science. He holds four patents in the field, has published over 250 papers in international technical literature, and been invited to lecture at over 100 conferences, workshops and research centres.

Paul Duval completed his PhD at the University of Grenoble, and has been a CNRS Research Scientist in the Laboratory of Glaciology and Geophysics of the Environment since 1969. His areas of research include ice physics and mechanics, glaciology and materials science. His studies on densification of snow have been developed with applications in paleoclimatology, and he has recently worked on the viscous behaviour of the ice on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. He has published over 100 refereed papers in international journals.

Not many of us are interested in ice but I ...

Not many of us are interested in ice but I am and the authors certainly are. Although the studies are of ice the applications are much broader including material science and glacial geology. I bought the book hoping to find some very specific and arcane knowledge on ice and found just what I was looking for and much more.

About the Author
William S. Price is Professor and Chair of Nanotechnology and leads the Nanoscale Organisation and Dynamics Group, University of Western Sydney. Professor Price is an expert in the theory, development and application of NMR spectroscopy focussing on NMR diffusion measurements and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for studying molecular association and molecular dynamics. His research has resulted in numerous awards including the Rennie Memorial Medal and the Ollé Prize (RACI) and the RACI-RSC Corday Morgan - Rennie Medal Exchange Lecturer.

About the Author
Mary Carruthers is the author of The Craft of Thought (Cambridge 1998) and The Medieval Craft of Memory (University of Pennsylvania 2002) as well as of The Book of Memory (1990 and 2008). She divides her time between New York City and Oxford, where she holds the positions of Remarque Professor of Literature at New York University and Fellow of All Souls College.

Cultivating Mental Expertise

This interesting but challenging book examines the disciplined mental habits of Christian monks in the period from late antiquity to the early middle ages. Christian monastic traditions evolved in a world quite alien to modern sensibilities. The monasteries themselves were isolated and insular. Daily life was austere and focused on paying homage to God through meditative prayer. Over time, the monks developed a meditative technology that included memory skills, emotional control, and creative expression. These practices are what Professor Carruthers means by The Craft of Thought, and she does an admirable job of helping moderns appreciate the accomplishments of these diligent and inventive ancients.

The book argues that monastic practices were rhetorical devices that lead their followers step by step to a point where they were able to meditate in ways that illuminated the canonical teachings of their faith. Her point that cultural practices can serve rhetorical functions is well illustrated in the book.

The monks were highly disciplined. They developed specialized memory techniques and applied them to learning scriptures. They were skillful in creating and recalling visual images. Meditation put these skills and others in play. First the monk established facilitating conditions - prostrating oneself while weeping, for example - then he recalled scriptures and used them to devise new visions to better capture the glory of God.

The book was a difficult read for me because of my weak background in medieval studies. Professor Carruthers wrote primarily for her colleagues in this area, and so she omitted contextual and historical background information. I also found the organization of her chapters somewhat loose so that the various bits and pieces did not always come together for me. However, overall I was pleased with the book. It gave me a learned scholar's insights into the cognitive techniques of medieval monastic life.

The "Bible" of WTO Law

It is not without good reason that this book is referred to in WTO Law as "The Bible". This book contains all the legal text relevant to current WTO law. The short and simple truth is that if you're studying or working in any field involving WTO Law, you'll need this book. Like most government or international organization publications it could use better organizing and have better indexes, but on the whole it does its job more than adequately.

Although the WTO agreements are available to the public on the WTO website, as well as the worldtradelaw.net website, most scholars and practitioners will want a compact volume to carry and to underline. Cambridge U. Press has put a sturdy binding on the paperback volume. The one flaw in the volume is that it omits the plurilateral agreements, such as the Agreement on Government Procurement. W. Lance Bennett is Ruddick C. Lawrence Professor of Communication and Professor of Political Science at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he is also director of the Center for Communication and Civic Engagement (www.engagedcitizen.org). His research and writing addresses how communication processes and technologies can enhance citizen engagement with politics and social life. Bennett has received the Ithiel de Sola Pool Lectureship and the Murray Edelman Distinguished Career Award from the American Political Science Association; a Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, from Uppsala University; the Olof Palme Visiting Professorship in Sweden; and the National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar career award.

Spectral Methods Made Easy

I bought this book to help me understand spectral methods enough to employ them for a nonlinear PDE problem that I have been working on. I sure am glad that I did! Here is a very complete and readable account of both the theoretical underpinnings and practical aspects of spectral methods. Spectral methods offer a fantastic alternative to classical approachs for numerical solutions of PDEs (such as finite-difference). In many ways, they are vastly superior - in terms of both accuracy and computational speed. What really makes this book so nice is that very little background is assumed (a little bit of mathematical analysis and some background in numerical analysis would help) and it is very straightforward to code up (I used Matlab) the examples sprinkled throughout the text. I also liked the fact that it is short and direct-at only 273 pages and cleanly partitioned into 12 chapters which expertly guide the reader from fundamentals up through advanced topics - it is quickly digestible and useable for practical applications! As an added bonus, an annotated bibliography is provided at the end of each chapter.
