The New White Nationalism in America: Its Challenge to Integration, by Carol M. Swain

Over the past ten years, a new white nationalist movement has gained strength in America, bringing with it the potential to disrupt already fragile race relations. Eschewing violence, this movement seeks to expand its influence mainly through argument and persuasion directed at its target audience of white Americans aggrieved over racial double standards, race-based affirmative action policies, high black-on-white crime rates, and liberal immigration policies. The movement has also been energized, Swain contends, by minority advocacy of multiculturalism. Due to its emphasis on group self-determination, multiculturalism has provided white nationalists with justification for advocating a parallel form of white solidarity. In addition, as Swain illustrates, technological advances such as the Internet have made it easier than ever before for white nationalists to reach a more mainstream audience. Swain's study is intended as a wake-up call to all Americans who cherish the Civil Rights Era vision of an integrated America, a common humanity, and equality before God and the law.

Review
"Swain's arguments are complex and many-sided...balanced and even moving." Books & Culture

"This is a disturbing book. Carol Swain bravely describes a world of white nationalists who reject racial integration. But where the establishment ignores these groups, Swain argues that the best response is debate rather than denial. The nationalists draw support because they express widespread white grievances that our leaders refuse to face, especially runaway immigration and affirmative action. Like Jefferson, Swain hears a firebell in the night." Lawrence M. Mead, New York University

"It is the great virtue of Carol Swain's work that she is willing to conduct honest inquiry into racial questions and bluntly tell the truth as she finds it. Drawing on the tools of social science as well as her own extraordinary personal experience, she shines a powerful light on issues ranging from crime and illegitimacy to affirmative action and the role of religion in promoting racial harmony. People across the ideological spectrum have a great deal to learn from this thoughtful and courageous scholar." Robert P. George; Princeton University

[T]he text is well written and the discussion provoking: highly recommended for collections at all levels in race relations, social stratification, and social policy." Choice

"...very strongly recommended for Political Science and Social Issues reference collections and supplemental reading lists." Wisconsin Bookwatch

"...extremely provocative book--marks the arrival of a bold new voice in the American race relations debate." First Things

"Swain has sent all a message that she is no cowering victim of either slavery or its ill effects." Baltimore Sun

"The New White Nationalism in America is a courageous book. It is certain to generate controversy. Scholars and concerned citizens may not fully agree with Carol Swain's thought provoking thesis on the rise of white nationalism and it implications for the future of American race relations. However, the force and intensity of her arguments will compel them to take the book seriously." William Julius Wilson, Harvard University

"[Swain's] willingness to challenge received opinion and defy the expected categories of our stale identity politics is sorely needed if America is ever to have an open and honest debate about race. Swain's book is an important contribution to such a debate and will be of interest to all those, whatever their policy preferences and whatever their race, who wish to see it take place." The Review of Politics

A Timely and Important Examination
By Eric Gartman
Black Political Scientist Carol Swain has produced a very important work which not only examines the growth of the new white nationalist movement in America, but also its sources. Swain notes that in the last ten years or so, a new, non-violent type of white nationalism has been growing in America, one that seeks to win people over through logic and argumentation. These groups vary from moderate to radical, but underlying them all is the same message: America is being undermined by minorities and immigrants. Perhaps the most important of these groups is "American Renaissance" led by Jared Taylor. Taylor is highly educated as are most his followers. They are against multiculturalism and seek to change the demographic balance in the country.
But Swain's examination of the various groups and their messages is only the begining. She then examines the three main issues that are fueling the rise of these groups appeal to mainstream white Americans: Immigration, Crime, and Affirmative-Action. Swain argues that current immigration policy is not sensitive to local needs and a discussion on reform is needed. Unfortunately, no such discussion exists at this moment. Similiarly, high black crime rates are a taboo subject which no mainstream politician will discuss, leaving the issue to be framed by the white nationalists who argue that blacks are criminal by nature. Again, the lack of an open discussion is the greatest problem in confronting this issue. Swain offers no solution on how to lower black crime, however. But the fact that she acknowledges black crime rates are indeed higher is a brave break from the past. The third major issue feeding the movement is affirmative action, seen by many whites as discrimination. More than any other issue, it contributes to the appeal of white nationalism. Swain makes a strong case for the elimination of race-based policies, in favor of class-based policies instead. Swain also delivers a scathing indictment of the black leadership, which she believes does not serve its communities interests. Since Swain herself is black, perhaps her words will have some resonance within the black community to reasses their leaders.
In sum, it seems that censorship is our greatest enemy. When we cannot talk about issues honestly and openly, those with radical agendas will take over since there is no other side to balance it out. At first glance, one might think of this book as a typical liberal attack on the radical right, simply denouncing them without offering solutions. Swain does no such thing. She is a conservative, one who understands that difference between the mainstream and radical right, and who offers us solutions on how to improve race relations for the future. Our efforts can no longer focus on minorities, but on all Americans, if we are to reach our ideal of a color-blind society.

Nice read

A good study on White Racialism in the United States and the affects of a "multi-racial" society on whites.
All too often non-whites flaunt their racial pride, and they have organizations to turn to. But where do whites turn? All too often the only place they can turn to are radical organizations, because the only non-racist organization for whites out there that i know of is the EAIF.org (European/American issues Forum). If anything we need more non-racist websites for whites that don't accuse whites of bigotry the second they enter the site. Not the best book in the world, but worth a glance.

The theory of racism is, paradoxically, totalitarian
By A Customer
As an Englishman (a Geordie to be precise) and admirer of America, this book is a welcome discussion of the problem of race in the States, a problem which runs far deeper than in Britain. The simple fact is that the epithet "racist" has become a profoundly effective weapon in propagating the slave morality which Nietzsche so despised. No one suggests that America is "white" because that particular demographic happened to be the most powerful, therefore the most deserving - a self-evident trait. No, instead the missionaries of the underclasses rant and rave about the "fact" that whites "cheated" to become dominant - as if they were possessed of some demonic power. The fact is, I abhor people who have disgust for other races than their own, but i abhor equally the acceptable face of anti-Nordicism. The fact is that whites dominated the earth because of simultaneous developments in their culture around the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - notably the evolution of capitalism. Whomever suggests that whites overcame undeservedly is clearly jealous of this master morality (cf. the Greeks, the Romans, the French and British Empires, etc) which was also a feature of non-white peoples like the Arabs and the Chinese; and yet they have no reason to be - historical dialecticism is not the goal of humanity, contrary to the assertions of the Hegelian-Marxists.

The Play of Character in Plato's Dialogues, by Ruby Blondell

This book is an interpretation of Plato in general, and several dialogues in particular, from the point of view of dramatic characterization. It thus forms part of the growing movement towards reading Plato "dramatically", as opposed to reading him as if he wrote treatises like most philosophers. At the same time, it is intended to show traditional "analytical" philosophical interpreters the significance of such "literary" features for understanding the philosophical issues at stake. Its overall goal is to bridge the gulf still existing between such interpreters and more "literary" readers.

Review
"Blondell has produced a fine study of Plato's use of characterization, one that must be reckoned with--and will be read with pleasure--by all serious students of the dialogues." Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"How are we to understand that Plato, the champion of transcendent and impersonal ideals, is also a brilliant depicter of human individuality? Blondell confronts this paradox in the most comprehensive and insightful treatment available of Plato's representation of human character.... highly recommended for college and university libraries; for upper-level undergraduates and above." Choice

"...rich and insightful...What to some Plato scholars was an exasperating and perplexing doctrine is productively contextualized by Blondell. We can now read Theaetetus with richer understanding than before. What more can one ask of scholarship?...Blondell has given us a narrative of Platonic development that...allows us to read the Platonic corpus in a way that makes sense of its many parts...we have a new perspective on Plato, a deeper appreciation than before of his commingling of literary power and philosophical wisdom." New England Classical Journal

"An impressive piece of scholarship worthy of close and considered attention." Ancient Philosophy

"B. has produced a richly detailed and complex study of an aspect of the dialogues which is often overlooked and her book is a valuable contribution to Platonic scholarship." - Tania Gergel, King's College London

The Cambridge Companion to Jesus (Cambridge Companions to Religion)From Cambridge University Press

This Companion's starting point is the realization that Jesus of Nazareth cannot be studied purely as a subject of ancient history, or as "a man like any other man". History, literature, theology and the dynamic of a living, worldwide religious reality appropriately impinge on the study of Jesus. This book therefore incorporates the most up-to-date historical work on Jesus with the "larger issues" of critical method--the story of Christian faith and study, as well as Jesus in a global church and in the encounter with Judaism and Islam.

"This is an immensely rich and rewarding compendium of essays by seventeen notable biblical scholars and theologians, together offering a largely complementary and always challenging range of historical and theological reflections upon Jesus' life and its effects...a remarkably coherent and comprehensive set of studies, surely the best of its kind currently available." Toronto Journal of Theology

Encyclopedic
By W. Cheung
Written by academics in the fields of New Testament/Biblical Studies, Theology and Divinity, including the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, this book is serious and it attempts to be all-encompassing. It probably has succeeded.

It is divided into two parts. Part One (pp. 11-120) consists of seven chapters. The idea is to dissect the gospels to discover who Jesus of Nazareth was, predominantly historically speaking. Ch. 6 ("Crucifixiton") provides an extremely plausible and coherent explanation of why Jesus was executed, and even attempts to understand his intention. Ch. 7 ("Resurrection") stresses the importance of taking the event of Jesus' Resurrection seriously. The idea is that even if you rejects its reality, you need to realize that the four accounts of Jesus' life exist merely because the writes of these accounts took Jesus' Resurrection as a given fact. It therefore makes no sense to attempt to extract the historical Jesus from the Christian accounts. Chapters 1 to 5 are equally fascinating and place Jesus firmly in his first century Jewish context.

Part Two (pp. 121-280) is more difficult and complex. It contains "critical and theological reflection" (p. 2) on Jesus. Ch. 9 ("Quests for the histoical Jesus") warns, via Martin Kähler, that "the Quest was in the end a subjective exercise, in which scholars created fifth gospels that had more to do with themselves than with the gospel proper" (p. 145). Ch. 10 ("The quest for the real Jesus") meditates on Mark 8:27 - "Who do people say that I am?". The concept is that there has always been more than one possible answer - it depends on what you believe in. The point therefore is historical research will always generate a different answer from the those of the believers.

Ch. 11 ("Many gospels, one Jesus?") is fascinating. While all four accounts do not agree in all factual details, "what a plurality of gospel offers is a complex repitition and multiple elaboration that intensifies and complicates" (p. 182). Each author represents his own early Christian group and slightly different perspectives are in fact quite understandable.
Ch. 12 ("The Christ of the Old and New Testament") discusses the seemingly inappropriate application of the title Messiah to Jesus, because this title means something completely different in the Old Testament. On the otherhand, it argues strongly that this concept was fluid and upon interpretation because of the convoluted context of Jewish history.

From Ch. 13, the books get even harder and deeper. Ch. 13 ("Jesus in Christian doctrine") ostensibly is about the Nicene creed, the Arian heresy, and Christology, it actually warns that theological inadequacy will lead to, quoting Karl Barth, "the rebellious establishment of some very private worldview as a kind of papacy" (p. 217). Ch 14 ("A history of faith in Jesus") by Archbishop Williams warns "Jesus is not the terminus of Christian experience and prayer, and when he becomes so, something is lost and confused in the Chistian mind" (p. 234) - in other words, modern sentimentality and sensuality should not supplant the "primitive Christian seriousness about judgement and change" (ibid.).

The ultimate chapter ("The future of Jesus Chirst") is very deep. The concept is that Jesus can only be properly understood in the context of the parousia which has not yet come (!). I must admit I am a bit lost here.

So in summary: a comprehensive survey on Jesus. Five stars.

Who do YOU say that I am?
By wolvie05
I borrowed this book expecting the usual academic skepticism and 'debunking'. What I found instead was a full, fair and reverent treatment of most of the major issues surrounding Jesus' life and his legacy which, surprisingly, almost amounts to a defense of Jesus' divinity. The introduction by Markus Bockmuehl and his essay on the resurrection are second to none. Having heard much more about N.T. Wright and his Jesus Seminar critics, I had completely overlooked this eloquent, learned British scholar, a firm Christian as well as immensely knowledgeable about the New Testament. It is simply amazing that whereas England is one of the most secular nations in Europe, it produces some of the finest orthodox scholars in religion-and-science (Denis Alexander, R.J. Berry, John Polkinghorne, etc.) as well as NT studies (Bockmuehl, N.T. Wright, etc.). Well worth reading.

A Population History of the United States, by Herbert S. Klein

A Population History of the United States is the first full-scale one volume survey of the demographic history of this country. It starts with the arrival of humans in the Western Hemisphere and ends with the current century. The basic trends in the growth of the national population are analyzed over centuries, including the changing nature of births, deaths, and migration of this population and the various factors which influenced these basic trends. The origin and distribution of pre-European American Indians is outlined, and the free and servile nature of European and African immigration is explained. Regional patterns of marriage and fertility and disease and morality in the pre-1800 European and African population are examined and compared with contemporary European developments. The decline of fertility and the rising rates of mortality are surveyed in the 19th century along with the mobility of population across the continent and into the cities. The decline of disease and mortality in the 20th century is explained and the late 20th century changes in family structure and fertility detailed. The rise of suburbs and the creation of inner city ghettos form a vital part of recent trends as do the return of new waves of foreign immigrants in the face of declining native births. Herbert S. Klein is Gouverneur Morris Professor of History at Columbia University and Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University and has recently written A Concise History of Bolivia (Cambridge, 2002) and co-authored Slave and Economy in Sao Paolo, Brazil, 1750-1850 (Stanford, 2002). He is also the author of The Atlantic Slave Trade (Cambridge, 1999) and Haciendas and Ayllus: Rural Society in the Bolivian Andes (Stanford, 1992).

Historians in particular will be challenged to connect the themes in population history to the broad outlines of social, cultural, political, and economic history. All readers will learn a great deal from this well-conceived and remarkably succinct overview." The Journal of Southern History, Susan E. Klepp, Temple University

"The United States is a vast, diverse, and complex nation that has always been difficult to define and dissect. But Herbert S. Klein has brought order out of chaos in crafting in one volume a readable, understandable, and fascinating demographic history of the American people. It is a grand achievement." Kenneth T. Jackson, Columbia University and President, the New York Historical Society

"Klein paints a sweeping picture of the changing American population from prehistoric times to 2003. In doing so, he teaches his reader important lessons about how the size and structure of population is intertwined with the supply of and demand for labor, something that many historians of population underemphasize. Moreover, he tells his story of U.S. births and deaths, marriages and migration - the key elements of population change - with a cogent connection to the broadest themes of social, economic, and political development. This gives immediacy and context to population, which has always played a central role in our nationas history." Myron P. Gutmann, Director and Professor of History, Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research and Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan

"This succinct but comprehensive survey of U.S. population history deftly and insightfully integrates the wide-ranging scholarship of the last several decades." Robert William Fogel, Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of American Institutions in the Graduate School of Business and Director of the Center for Population Economics, University of Chicago and Winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1993

Solid
By R. Albin
This is a solid, concise overview-summary of US historical demography. Klein begins with pre-Columbian societies and moves forward to the early 21st century. Major changes in popluation structure, fertility, mortality, marriage, migration, and other relevant issues are discussed concisely. There is an abundance of useful charts and tables. While concise, this book is written well and contains a lot of interesting detail. Some features are quite interesting. The USA, for example, is one of 2 nations known to have entered the demographic transition prior to major mortality drops.

Very thorough.
By Mark Howells
This is an interesting book which describes the Phoenician expansion into the Western Mediterranean from the eighth to sixth centuries B.C. The focus is the Iberian Phoenician settlements on either side of the Pillars of Hercules with Gadir (Cadiz) as the main attraction. As the written record of the Phoenicians themselves did not survive, this work relies primarily on archaeological information and the small body of sources written by the Phoenicians' neighboring cultures (the Greek Homer's epic poetry, the Jewish Old Testament, etc.).
There is much discussion about the social, political, and economic reasons for the Phoenician expansion westward. In addition, the form which this expansion took - from informal trade to outright colonization is explored. A large part of the book is devoted to the competing historical theories regarding this expansion in which the author is obviously well-grounded.
Who engaged in the trade and expansion- the palace, the temple, or independent merchants? How was it organized? What were the ships like? What were the commodities traded? How were Phoenician relations with the indigenous peoples handled? All these questions are answered.
There is obviously comparison between the original Phoenician settlements in the West and those of her daughter colony Carthage which succeeded them. The emphasis in this work is on the Phoenician period rather than the following Punic period of settlement. This is done to give the Phoenicians' initial accomplishments in the West due credit rather than have them overshadowed by Carthage.
With the book's emphasis on the Iberian peninsula, the Phoenician enclaves in the central Mediterranean such as on Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia do not get much attention. I would have enjoyed more comparison between the Phoenician settlements and the subsequent Greek colonies in the West as well.
An interesting read on a little-known but highly-influential ancient people. And don't forget to thank them for this alphabet while you're at it.

Very poor research....
By History reader
The Phoenicians are fascinating people and deserve a good telling of their history. Unfortunately this is not it. After acknowledging significant errors in the first edition, the author simply added new evidence contradicting older parts of the book. For example, destruction by the Sea Peoples is said to have resulted in Tyre being 'founded' after 1200 BC. But later it is admitted that Tyre was not destroyed by the Sea Peoples, so the city existed before that date. Nevertheless, the earlier error is still used as the basis for claiming that the Phoenicians of Tyre made no westward expansion across the Mediterranean until a later time. Unfortunately this edition still contains many significant errors, but now with contradictions. Phoenicians (2000) by Markoe and other books are better sources.

An important work on Phoenicia!
By Mark
Maria Eugenia Aubet is a Spanish Archeologist who has made a significant contribution to the history of the maritime trade and colonies of the Phoenicians. Phoenicia, now modern-day Lebanon, was the home of the Biblical Canaanites, who, because of contraction of their land from Israelite and other invasions, turned outward to the Mediterranean Sea for survival. In trading with so many diverse nations, the Phoenicians developed a 22-letter alphabet based on sound, the basis of our alphabet of today.

This book is scientific and well-presented. My only regret is that she could have spent more time on the development of the alphabet.

Open Economy Macroeconomics, by Asbjørn Rødseth

Professor Rødseth provides a broad survey of open economy macroeconomics within a unified framework. This upper-level book reviews the theories employed by ministries of finance, central banks and financial institutions that form the basis for most quantitative models of open economies. It also points out the limitations of these theories and gives an update on recent research. The emphasis is on how the nature of the markets for foreign exchange and for exports and imports sets the stage for government policy and determines the macroeconomic effects of external and internal shocks.

Stuffing the Ballot Box: Fraud, Electoral Reform, and Democratization in Costa Rica (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics), by Fabric

This pioneering study of electoral fraud and reform focuses on Costa Rica, a country where parties gradually transformed a fraud-ridden political system into one renowned for stability and fair elections by the mid-twentieth century. Lehoucq and Molina draw upon a unique database of more than 1,300 accusations of ballot-rigging to show that, independently of social structural constraints, parties denounced fraud where electoral laws made the struggle for power more competitive. They explain how institutional arrangements generated opportunities for several executives to assemble legislative coalitions to enact far-reaching reforms.

Review
"A fascinating analysis of how electoral reform emerged in Costa Rica in a situation of competitive political pressures and the threat of civil war. A lesson in the unexpected benefits and costs of reform and in the way reforms, once in place, can endure as citizens and politicians learn their value. Costa Rica's positive experience with an independent body to oversee elections provides lessons for the United States and other countries grappling with the difficulties of running fair elections." Susan Rose-Ackerman, Yale University

"Stuffing the Ballot Box is that rare and important book that systematically studies a fundamental problem that is largely overlooked in the literature. The authors offer an original and analytically sophisticated assessment of the institutional and social incentives for fraud and for changes in voting rules. Lehoucq and Molina's study is much more than just an investigation of politics in Costa Rica. They offer a general explanation for corruption in voting and they provide a serious data set on allegations of vote fraud over a lengthy time period and across several voting districts in Costa Rica. As Costa Rica has undergone dramatic changes in its electoral system and in the likely incidence of fraud over the past century, the data provide a wonderful foundation for anyone interested in investigating electoral reform." Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution and Professor, NYU

Floer Homology Groups in Yang-Mills Theory (Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics), by S. K. Donaldson

This monograph gives a thorough exposition of Floer's seminal work during the 1980s from a contemporary viewpoint. The material contained here was developed with specific applications in mind. However, it has now become clear that the techniques used are important for many current areas of research. An important example would be symplectic theory and gluing problems for self-dual metrics and other metrics with special holonomy. The author writes with the big picture constantly in mind. As well as a review of the current state of knowledge, there are sections on the likely direction of future research. Included in this are connections between Floer groups and the celebrated Seiberg-Witten invariants. The results described in this volume form part of the area known as Donaldson theory. The significance of this work is such that the author was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal for his contribution.

Medieval Africa, 1250-1800, by Roland Oliver, Anthony Atmore

This radically revised and updated companion volume to the authors' well-known Africa since 1800 (now in its fourth edition) takes African history from about 1250 AD, when African societies were expanding their political and economic scope, and when Islamic influences were already reaching across the Sahara and down the Indian Ocean coastline. It continues through the period of early European contact from the fifteenth century onward, with much emphasis on expanding Atlantic trade.

This book takes the shotgun approach: wide range of topics, yet none are dealt with deeply. Still a good intro to the subject.

Long prized in its original edition by both students and professionals as the best introduction to object-oriented technology, now this book is completely up-to-date with new material in every chapter. There are also new chapters on good OO programming techniques and OO software testing. All modeling notation has been rewritten in UML notation. Review questions at the end of each chapter allow readers to test their newly acquired knowledge. In addition, the author takes time to reflect on the lessons learned over the past few years by discussing the proven benefits and drawbacks of the technology. This is the perfect book for any software development professional or student seeking an introduction to the concepts and terminology of object technology.

Review
'Overall an introduction to OO software in structured steps written in a teachign style, easy to read for a novice.' CVu

From the Back Cover
An ideal introductory book to object-orientation, written by a developer for developers. Starting with a description of why developers and their organizations want to take advantage of the object-oriented (OO) paradigm. It quickly gets into leading edge development techniques such as CRC (Class- Responsibililty-Collaborator) modelling and use-cases. The reader is then introduced to the so-called "complicated" OO concepts in a straight-forward and easy manner. Unlike many other books, the entire OO dvelopment process is put in perspective, presenting both serial and iterative development strategies.

About the Author
Scott W. Ambler is a senior consultant of Ronin International, Inc., a software services consulting firm that specializes in software process improvement, mentoring, and training. He is also founder and thought leader of the Agile Modeling (AM) methodology and the Enterprise Unified Process (EUP). He is a popular international speaker, a regular columnist for Software Development magazine, and the award-winning author of several books, including The Object Primer 3/e, Agile Modeling, and Agile Database Techniques.

Clarifying the "What, When, Why and How" of OO Development
By T. L. Goodman
I probably purchased somewhere upwards of twenty books on the topics of the UML and object-oriented development before buying The Object Primer, 2nd Edition. Yeah, it probably would have been nice to have read this one first, but on the other hand, it may have been just the right book at the right time in terms of my learning process. As a result of my previous efforts, I was getting overwhelmed and confused by the sheer volume of concepts, notations, diagrams, development processes, and tools associated with becoming proficient with UML modeling and object-oriented development. While I had learned lots of important terminology and techniques from the previous books, I found The Object Primer to be enormously practical and useful in terms of putting it all together and breaking through to a working level of proficiency.
Among the aspects of the book that I appreciated are it's easy-to-read style, effective use of diagrams and visual examples, and the "techniques" sections with clear directives about what to do, and what not to do, in specific areas. I was able to use the technique lists in somewhat of a cookbook style as I applied what I was learning to some of my own work.
So far, in my growing library of OO development books, this one provides the "biggest bang for the buck".

Actually much more than just an object primer!
By B3n S6z
This is a great book! Not that it's perfect, but nothing is. This book is not only a very clear, extremely well-organized approach to learning and/or becoming expert in "Object Orientation and the UML," as the the cover says, but he presents this together with a development methodology that makes a *lot* of sense. For example, for those of you who have read Karl Wiegers' excellent "Software Requirements," did you notice that at the end of the book you knew exactly what good requirements are but not how to get there? Me too! But Ambler takes you on a whirlwind tour, with each page absolutely *packed* with value, that instead leaves you saying "hey, now I know not only what good object oriented designs are, but how to get there from here!"
This is a strange thing to say, but this book actually gave me the requirements engineering methodology I needed to get from point A to B -- having requirements that Karl Wiegers would be proud of!

This guy is good! The OO comes before the UML.
By David Gurgel
OO came first and then came UML to model it! This book is all about the principles of object-oriented requirements, analysis, and design first and secondly about the UML tools for modeling these steps in project development. That's as it should be since OO is the thing most to be admired, and UML is (just) a popular and very useful language for modeling OO development. Too many UML books are so intent on UML that the fundamentals of OO are ignored. The first edition of this book was published in 1995 just before UML was born. Its author, Scott Ambler, is a prolific and renowned writer and developer.
The book has many detailed UML diagrams and is clearly written in a pleasant, professional style. The book is not about implementation. Look elsewhere for sample code, including some of Ambler's fine other publications.
Don't be lislead by the word "Primer" in the title. It's for the serious reader and would make a good text, but for a junior or senior level CS course. If you are a professional and could have just two references in your library for your first OO project, this 523-page book together with a good programming reference (Java, C++, C#, or VB.NET) would be a good choice.
