About the Author
Andrew N. Meltzoff studied psychology at Harvard and Oxford (D. Phil. 1976). He has been a full professor at the University of Washington since 1988. In 2000 he was named Director of the UW Center for Mind, Brain and Learning. Meltzoff is the recipient of a National Institute of Health Merit Award for outstanding research. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and a foreign member of the Norwegian National Academy of Science and Letters. He is the co-author of Words, Thoughts and Theories (1997) and The Scientist in the Crib: What Early Learning Tells Us about the Mind (1999). Wolfgang Prinz studied Psychology, Philosophy and Zoology at the University of Muenster, Germany. He took his Ph.D. in 1970 at the Dept. of Psychology at the University of Bielefeld (1975-1990) and at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (1990-1998). Since 1990 he is the Director at the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research, Munich. He has published empirical and theoretical work on perception, action, consciousness and attention as well as on the history of psychology.

Vastly improved translations, all together in the same volume!!!

It is always useful to compare translations, even though I think Young's translations are superior to those in Hofstader's Poetry, Language, Thought (Perennial Classics) . Young's English renderings are much clearer and more accurate. However, Hofstader was making an honest and intelligent effort, and it is interesting to see where he took license (substituting, for example, "the children" for the less clear "childhood") in "Why Poets?" (p. 229 in Young, [Wozu Dichter?] . I think Young's "Why Poets?" is a far better rendering of "Wozu Dichter?" than the equally valid "What are Poets for?" ("Wozu" can mean both "why" and "what.") Heidegger is all about the question (and the question of the question). "What for? reduces the question to one of use, whereas Young's "Why" is much stranger, totally unexpected, and much more open. In addition to the high quality of Young's translations, this book is invaluable for being the first translation of Off the Beaten Track. Parts of which had been translated, published, and scattered in separate books. Young's Pathmarksis equally invaluable. Anyone interested in Heidegger who reads Heidegger exclusively or primarily in English should have both of Young's books.

On first read-through, I was excited by this book. Enough so that I organized and taught a graduate seminar using it as a text. My experience with the book was less than fully satisfactory, I am sorry to say. The subject matter is important, and van der Vaart's pathway through the material is well conceived, but in the nitty-gritty details there are problems. The all-important Chapters 19-25, on asymptotics in metric spaces, suffers from wild differences in level of exposition, even within individual chapters. Some notations and concepts are left undefined. Most proofs are incomplete sketches, leaving many students confused and bewildered. It takes a lot of mathematical maturity to fully decode what van der Vaart has to say, with the result that his message is often missed or misunderstood. The supplementary notes that I felt required to write ballooned from an initial 10 pages to over 60, and I believe that other, more conscientious professors have written far more. I have no doubt that some of those "supplementary" collections of notes will see their way into print, as textbooks that ultimately do a far better job with this critical material.

Excellent textbook on asymptotics in statistics

This book covers asymptotics at a level suitable for graduate students in statistics and other disciplines such as economics. It does not really treat time-series issues, but apart from that its coverage is very impressive. It covers M-estimators, efficiency, quantile estimators, semiparametrics, and much more. The writing is remarkably lucid; proofs are succinct but very readable. One feature I particularly liked was a very readable introduction to empirical process theory, which would be a good place to start before tackling the van der Vaart and Wellner's more advanced book.

Excellent book, but leaves out many finer technical details.

It is a great book with excellent coverage of topics, but it does not fill in many crucial and important details - the kind of technical details which is exactly what you are looking for. If you are reading it thoroughly, after a stage you will wonder why the author has left so much unwritten and unclear. You may scratch your head on one single statement for a week or more and start feeling frustrated. One particular example is the treatment of M-estimators in Chapter 5.

But, nevertheless it is still worth reading every bit, because it provides extremely useful results and tools in almost all the areas, which it covers.

About the Author
Linda Woodhead is a Senior Lecturer in Christian Studies at Lancaster University. She has written extensively on Christianity, culture and society. Recent edited books include Peter Berger and the Study of Religion (2001), Religions in the Modern World (2002), Predicting Religion (2003, with Grace Davie and Paul Heelas) and Congregational Studies in the UK (2004, with Matthew Guest and Karin Tusting).

Christianity and Power

Christianity `has never been one thing' (406) and therefore, a book about Christianity has to be both about its many facets, and about its success and failure (1). The introduction provides the thesis of the book: `It focuses on the changing relations between Christianity and society and looks, in particular, at the ways in which Christianity has related to power' (1). Woodhead's book is a study of religion in its social locatedness; a study of Christianity's `force relations' (Foucault). Christian faith, whatever else it might be, is a form of power; it is a form of religious, social, ideological, cultural, pastoral, and personal power.

The author adds a further clarification to her thesis-statement, `Above all, the book considers Christian history in terms of two competing models of power-power from on high and power from below-and the consequences of the church's tendency to favour the former over the latter' (1).

There seems to be two parallel themes next to Woodhead's main thesis. The first is Woodhead's analysis of voluntarist/non-voluntarist forms of Christianity. The studied opposites are `from on high/non-voluntarist/male' and `from below/voluntarist/female.' The second parallel theme is the gradual subjectivization of the Christian religion. This topic shows up in the second part of the book, which studies the modern period of the church history.

In Woodhead's own words, her book provides `a thematisation of history' rather than a mere `compendium of facts' (3-4). Precisely because her book is a `thematisation of history,' one wonders whether the comprehensive title An Introduction to Christianity is completely justified.

The Book of Jonah in Religious and Literary Examining Rooms - the Poking Continues, the Diagnoses Keep Changing

This romp through literary theory and through the changing reception of the Book of Jonah by Jews and Christians is worth reading even though it perhaps too specific in subject. After all, many may doubt the merits of reading the latest take in centuries of commentary on a four-page "book." Among striking asides by the author is the observation that the "universalism" of the European Enlightenment was exclusionary toward Jews. While much has been written about the Book of Jonah since "A Biblical Text" was published in 2000, it deserves to go back into print.

Good volume, and being referred to a good deal, not perfect, though

As someone who is both interested in theatre history and especially Victorian and Edwardian theatre, I was intrigued by this book. It turns out to be comprehensive, but not as much as it could be, and more than one section left me feeling like it was incomplete, to my dismay. Not that anything was bad, or poorly written--on the contrary, the anthology of views (which is what it is) was quite good; just not as fully informative as it could have been. I wanted more in a Cambridge Companion. Recommended, but with a caveat that I infer Theatre History, of which this is an example, is an evolving discipline. The editor did do a splendid job in collating the material.
