A very busy man

The German Jesuit and polymath Athanasius Kircher is commonly referred to as "the last man who knew everything." This could just as well be said about Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, born 1646 in the city of Leipzig in conservative protestant Saxony. With seemingly boundless energy this prodigy of learning delved into an astonishing array of areas, including theology, philosophy, language, history, physics, and mathematics, as well as developing programs for draining silver mines and the cultivation of silk (something W.G. Sebald apparently missed in his The Rings of Saturn). As with most of his practical schemes, they both failed. On top of this he loved to travel. He spent time in Paris, Berlin and Vienna and visited Italy, England and the Netherlands, where he famously met Spinoza. Despite difference of opinion they kept a respectful epistolary contact. His correspondence was enormous and amounted to a veritable who's who of contemporary thinkers, including Newton himself. The acrimonious battle about who first discovered the calculus plagued Leibniz until the end of his life. Newton, not one to budge, had his foot soldiers stain his adversary's good name, even continuing the war against him "beyond death." Leibniz seems to have been good natured, always seeking reconciliation and striving for ecumenical unity as well as unity of knowledge. In this respect one could perhaps be reminded of Edward O. Wilson. On the other hand, he could drive his employer at the court of Hanover to the brink of despair. Ever finding an excuse to travel abroad, Leibniz seemed unable to finish any of the projects he was engaged in. His history of the Guelf family never hit the presses but when it eventually did, it was clearly a scholarly effort of the first order. Only nobody ever saw it. Even the impressive - and in his lifetime published - Theodicy was a prelude for an even more ambitious endeavor. There will apparently be years still before his entire output is sorted out.
Leibniz was a universal genius alright; still there were a few blind spots. One of them was his lack of interest in the Arts. When visiting Rome and Venice, he didn't spend one word of admiration for the world famous architecture of the two cities. Antognazza offers an explanation: Leibniz was myopic and probably had no eye for his surroundings. This might be so, but one wonders how you could miss the splendors of St. Mark's or St. Peter's; with or without glasses.
The other blind spot concerned women. Leibniz never married and there seems to have been only one opportunity when he was around fifty for a practical arrangement of sorts. Leibniz showed only luke-warm interest. He did, however, entertain platonic friendships with women, preferably princesses or queens. Sophie Charlotte queen of Prussia was one of his best friends and a learned one at that. When his protector in Hanover Sophie von der Pfalz passed away, Leibniz showed the only hint of a crisis in his long life (70). He couldn't work for months and when he eventually resumed, many of his friends were gone and the fight with Newton was at its peak. He spent the remainder of his life plodding away at the court of Hanover and his burial was described as worthy of a "robber." Although this was probably exaggerated, the contrast with Newton's grand burial as the hero of his country was glaring.
Even if Leibniz has in many ways been eclipsed by both Newton and Kant, his legacy is a lasting one. When consulting the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Descartes and Spinoza gets 16 pages each, Berkeley 11 and Leibniz earns a full 17 pages. The sheer amount of his energy and optimism is jaw-dropping. Only two years before his death, he sought to become chancellor of Transylvania. "Nothing came of this rather improbable idea" (p. 491), Antognazza sighs downhearted. If alive today, he would probably have been diagnosed with ADHD. Consequently, one has a sense of exhaustion when putting this biography down. For a shorter story one can consult Steven Nadler's The Best of All Possible Worlds, but Maria Rosa Antognazza has delivered an in-depth intellectual biography which despite its scholarly effort succeeds admirably in rendering Leibniz as, well, alive and kicking.

Great Biography of a Great Philosopher

This well-written, thoroughly researched biography of Leibniz is essential for the library of anyone interested in Leibniz himself or the intellectual life of the seventeenth century. Author Maria Rosa Antognazza has provided both the professional philosopher and the educated general reader with a gem of a book that succeeds in presenting the remarkable diversity of Leibniz's mind in a smoothly flowing narrative that gives the picture of both a man and an age. Leibniz himself appears as a hard working, personable, slightly eccentric man the equal of any mind in a time of great minds. His brilliance was obvious from youth and he was soon employed in important work and in contact with important people. During his lifetime Christian society was trying to reunite itself after the ideological divisions and wars of the Reformation and the understanding of the physical world was being transformed by the microscope, the telescope and new theories concerning the nature of matter. Leibniz, through his own researches and vast correspondence with the major figures of the day, lived at the heart of these debates. The sure hand of Dr. Antognazza clearly lays out Leibniz's vision of his work: all fields of knowledge form a unity because knowledge reveals the unity of God's creation and should be used for the benefit of mankind. Yet, at the end, one is left with the impression that, despite inventing the infinitesimal calculus and being deeply engaged with the science of his day, Leibniz was the last great polymath of the scholastic world that was slowly being forced to give way to the Cartesian and Newtonian theories he had criticized so vigorously. Nevertheless, Leibniz is one of the great philosophers and Dr. Antognazza's book is one of the great philosophical biographies.

What everyone else said. A masterpiece. Exhausting, exhaustive, beautifully written. One can only wonder at the amount of work that went into it, archive upon archive, manuscript upon manuscript, work that doesn't have to be done again for a long long time, if ever (the last full biography was in the 19th century). Apart from the vast array of Leibniziana, the book also illuminates the history of how the House of Hanover ended up on the English throne. On a lighter note, it is simultaneously a very comforting book for all those of us lesser mortals who think up a hundred projects and never quite get them finished.....at least we aren't stuck writing the History of the Este/Guelf/Hanoverians.
