The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global (Cambridge Middle East Studies), by Fawaz A. Gerges

Since September 11, Al Qaeda has been portrayed as an Islamist front united in armed struggle, or jihad, against the Christian West. However, as the historian and commentator Fawaz A. Gerges argues, the reality is rather different and more complex. In fact, Al Qaeda represents a minority within the jihadist movement, and its strategies have been vehemently criticized and opposed by religious nationalists among the jihadis, who prefer to concentrate on changing the Muslim world rather than taking the fight global. It is this rift that led to the events of September 11 and that has dominated subsequent developments. Through several years of primary field research, the author unravels the story of the jihadist movement and explores how it came into being, the philosophies of its founding fathers, its structure, the rifts and tensions that split its ranks, and why some members, like Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, favored international over local strategies in taking the war to the West. This is an articulate and original book that sheds light on the tactics used by the jihadis in the last three decades. As more alienated young Muslims are seduced into joining, the author asks where the jihadist movement is going and whether it can survive and shed its violent character. Fawaz A. Gerges holds the Christian A. Johnson Chair in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at Sarah Lawrence College. He was educated at Oxford University and the London School of Economics and has previously been a Research Fellow at Harvard and Princeton universities. He is also a senior analyst and regular commentator for ABC television news. His books include America and Political Islam: Clash of Interests or Clash of Cultures? (Cambridge,1999) and The Journey of the Jihadis: A Biography of a State of Mind (Harcourt Press, 2006). He has written extensively on Arab and Muslim politics, Islamist movements, American foreign policy, and relations between the world of Islam and the West. His articles have appeared in several of the most prestigious journals and newspapers in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

Review
"In this well-grounded and at times gripping account of militant Islamist activism, Gerges gives the most persuasive explanation yet for the direction taken by those jihadis who have set their sights on nothing less than a shift in the global balance of power. Taking these ruthless idealists of the new century seriously, through their writings and through interviews, he brings an immediacy to the story which shows up their limitations, but also underlines the ferocity of their desire to eliminate those who stand against them." Professor Charles Tripp, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

"Fawaz Gerges has written an authoritative, deeply-researched account of jihadist movements around the Middle East, and shows that these movements, far from monolithic, are rife with ideological and strategic debates. This stimulating and well-written book will be of great interest to the general reader and the specialist alike." Peter Bergen, CNN Terrorism Analyst and author of Holy War, Inc.: Inside the Secret World of Osama bin Laden

"No previous author has gone as far as Fawaz Gerges in explaining and illustrating the politics of Al Qaeda. On the basis of many interviews with jihadi militants, a close reading of the voluminous Arab literature thrown by its members, and, not least, the author's astute and historically informed judgment, he has produced a rich and most informative portrait of this movement. Identifying the political costs to the Arab world of this extreme, if very much minoritarian tendency, he also shows how repeated miscalculations by the West, from Afghanistan in the 1980s to Iraq after 2003, have given a new lease of life to the anger and fantasies of bin Laden and his followers." Professor Fred Halliday, London School of Economics, and author of Two Hours that Shook the World and 100 Myths About Islam

"His interviews are fascinating, disturbing and illuminating, and offer remarkably consistent arguments." Paula Newberg, Skidmore College

"...a few brave academics have stepped with books that evince a clearsighted vision and solid expertise. Among the best of these is Fawaz A. Gerges's The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global." --Chronicle of Higher Education, Juan R.I. Cole

"The title of Fawaz A. Gerges's incisive The Far Enemy refers to the al Qaeda term for the United States and its Western allies, but the book's focus is squarely on the internal divisions and ideological disputes that rent the jihadis during the mid-1990s." Bruce Hoffman, Washington Post Book World

“The author uses primary Arabic sources and interviews with militants to give a fascinating account of one of the most complex phenomena in the contemporary Middle East. Highly recommended.”

An Important Contribution to Middle Eastern Studies
By Dr. Jonathan Dolhenty
There is no doubt that Islam as a religion and Islamic-Western relations as a political problem have captured the attention of everyone in the United States who is tuned into current affairs. September 11th, the worst terrorist attack in American history, and the current international war on terrorism have changed the lives of people around the globe. The search for the accused masterminds behind 9/11 and other recent attacks against Western and Western-allied targets, and the pursuit of those who are the direct perpetrators of terrorist activities, is an ongoing and very expensive enterprise.

Of particular interest are the whereabouts and capture of Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, leaders of the terrorist group called Al Qaeda. For the most part, Al Qaeda has been characterized as an Islamist front united in armed struggle, or "jihad," against Western civilization and Western interests. But Fawaz A. Gerges, a noted historian and Middle East expert, has a different take on the matter and has offered his own analysis in "The Far Enemy," a book that is extremely detailed and meticulously researched.

Gerges certainly possesses the credentials needed to write a book such as this. Educated at Oxford University and the London School of Economics, he has previously been a Research Fellow at Harvard and Princeton universities, and he now holds the Christian A. Johnson Chair in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at Sarah Lawrence College. Gerges has written widely on Arab and Muslim politics, Islamist movements, American foreign policy, and relations between the world of Islam and the West. His has authored several books and his articles have appeared in several of the most respected journals and newspapers in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. He is also a senior analyst and regular commentator for ABC television news on Middle Eastern affairs.

The first question that naturally comes to one's mind is: What is meant by the "Far Enemy"? Furthermore, if there is a "far enemy," there should be a "near enemy" and who is that? I have read a great deal about Islam and the Islamic "jihad" during the past few years and never came across these terms before. Now that I am familiar with them, thanks to the author, past and current events regarding Islamic-Western tensions, and some of the events in certain Muslim-dominated nations, are better understood. To put it simply, the "far enemy" refers to the United States and its Western allies; the "near enemy" are the Muslim regimes which have been deemed "unacceptable" either for their secularization of politics and society or because, in the view of some jihadists, the religious authorities and scholars have been "subverted by corrupting Western influences."

Up until the late 1990s, according to the author, jihadists had concentrated their attention on fighting the "near enemy," that is, bringing about political and social change within Muslim nations, returning these nations to their essential Islamic religious foundation. Then, as the twenty-first century approached, some jihadists internationalized the battle and the "far enemy" became the focus of the struggle. This is the situation regarding Al Qaeda. Gerges argues that Al Qaeda is actually a minority within the jihadist movement. Moreover, it has been criticized and opposed by other jihadists, namely the religious nationalists who want to focus on changing the Muslim world rather than internationalizing the battle. These latter want to confront and change the "near enemy" and not fight the "far enemy."

One example of the above will be related here. Referring to Nageh Abdullah Ibrahim, a major theoretician of the jihadist organization called the Islamic Group who is currently serving a life sentence in Egypt, Gerges states: "...Ibrahim and other imprisoned Islamic Group leaders fault Al Qaeda for ignoring reality and living in its own bubble. They go after bin Laden with a vengeance, accusing him of shutting his eyes and ears and blindly plunging forward, bringing the temple down on his own head the ummah's as well."

Gerges continues: "Ibrahim says that had bin Laden paid adequate attention to his humble capabilities, he would have refrained from declaring war on the world, but the issue is bigger than that because bin Laden has lost touch with reality, rationality, and religious precepts. As a result, Ibrahim adds, Al Qaeda caused the downfall of two Muslim regimes -- in Kabul and Baghdad -- and Arab states have faced the brunt of the American armada. In short, Al Qaeda is no longer an intact, cohesive organization because it confuses myth with fact and entertains strange ideas. Ibrahim compares Al Qaeda with the Saddam Hussein regime and implies that bin Laden could bring about the destruction of his network like Hussein did to the Iraqi state."

Those who think that the jihadists constitute a unified movement in complete agreement about who is the real adversary and the strategies to be employed in defeating it are in error, according to Gerges. This whole issue is far more complex than most Western observers think. There has been a rift, largely ignored by the West, between those Islamic jihadists who are interested in promoting global terrorism, going after the "far enemy," and those who want to concentrate on the "near enemy." This rift, says Gerges, led to the events of September 11 and has dominated developments ever since.

According to Gerges, the West must understand this: "...the war against transnationalist jihadis cannot be won on the battlefield in either Afghanistan or Iraq; this is not a conventional war in which two armies confront each other and emerge victorious or vanquished. One of the arguments advanced in the book is that the most effective means to put Al Qaeda out of business is to complete its encirclement and siege internally; there is overwhelming evidence pointing in that direction: bin Laden and his associates have lost the war for Muslim minds."

This is a very complex, detailed work based on firsthand field research, interviews, primary documents, and letters. Not, however, your leisure-time reading.

A serious work worth reading again and again
By M. L Lamendola
When any book has 60-some pages of citations and notes, you know it's a serious work.

These days, it seems everyone is an armchair expert with a "factual" opinion on the global Jihad situation. Because I receive phone calls from US soldiers and civilians serving or working in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Bosnia, I have a bit of insight into this situation. What most people spew as fact is merely rewarmed televised propaganda with little or no basis in reality.

Thus, it was refreshing to read Gerges' well-researched book. Gerges is authoritative, not opinionated. This is evident in his extensive use of letters written by various key players in the global jihad psychodrama.

One of the points he discussed was how the Muslim mainstream has rejected Osama bin Laden--and why. Through my volunteer work in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), I have been interacting with Muslims for many years--long before September 11. My opinion of these people has nothing to do with their religion. I have found them to be intelligent, hard-working, considerate, and giving. Not at all the characterization we find being put forth by our more "insulated" fellow citizens. Being of Sicilian decent myself, I know a thing or two about being "suspected"--as many innocent Muslims are today.

The situation in the Middle East is not one of a monolithic Muslim culture waging war against the so-called "Christian" nations. In France, Muslims outnumber Catholics and Protestants combined. Any time I read a book or article about Jihad, I know the author has stepped into "stupidland" as soon as there's mention of "the Middle East Muslims still fighting the Crusades against Europe."

Yes, in the minds of a few zealot Muslims, the Crusade thing is true. But let's not forget we have zealot "Christians" in the USA running around in bed sheets and lighting crosses on people's front lawns. In both cases, religious leaders have declared the zealots as acting in violation of their respective scriptures. Broad generalizations based on special cases may be normal for American mainstream media, but that doesn't make them correct or useful.

Gerges doesn't make any generalizations. In fact, I had to stop reading at a few points to wonder what point he was trying to make. When I did that, I realized it wasn't about selling his point to the reader. At those few points where I had to stop to digest the material before moving on, Gerges was going in-depth and making me out together a structure of points. The global Jihad isn't a linear thing, or something you can boil down to a few trite statements. It was great to see someone treat this complex subject with the in-depth examination and evidence it deserves.

So, what can you expect to find in this book that I like so much? Gerges starts out with a lengthy introduction that gives perspective on September 11. Then he addresses the Afghan War (U.S.-backed Taliban against the U.S.S.R.) and how that sowed the seeds of transnational Jihad. It's worthwhile to read that twice.

Then, he takes the reader through various writing and testimony showing the tension between various groups and alliances, and how Osama bin Laden forced the issue of international Jihad. Osama bin Laden wanted to "attack the head of the snake," meaning the USA. Gerges doesn't mention this, but I find it interesting that it was US troops who saved thousands of Muslim men, women, and children in the Balkans in the 1990s while Osama bin Laden did nothing for them.

But Gerges does take many sharp jabs at bin Laden, and he is not alone. With his hatred and his "glorious" attacks of September 11, bin Laden did immense damage to his own movement. This caused a split in the Jihadis, which Gerges discusses in depth.

This book offers much more, which I won't go into here. If you want to understand what's been driving these fanatics, this book will help you enormously. Positive change is occurring, and our leaders will have to be careful not to tip things back the other direction.

Understanding what is going on can help us cope with the fear, uncertainty, and doubt that are compounded by the biased reporting and sensationalist news coverage that poison public opinion. But I think it's also important that we in the West don't succumb to the same narrow-minded hatred that fueled this whole global Jihad to begin with.

Form is important, as it dictates readability. Fortunately, this book scored very well on substance and on form. This book actually uses Standard Written English (SWE). This was a refreshing change from the Pidgin English that so many of today's authors slop onto our reading palettes. The care taken in writing this book shows that the author and publisher actually cared about the reader. That's a huge plus.

More than Soundbites
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon
Though the author seems to belabor the point at times, the end result is a study in the jihadist trends of the past 30+ years. In this book you will be introduced to the key players in this drama along with the historical background of how their thought and teaching developed. It will take some time to digest it all but do not rush the reading and you will be rewarded with a level of analysis lacking in most books and reporting on the subject. It is well written for such a complex and daunting study.

One Kind of Freedom: The Economic Consequences of Emancipation, by Roger L. Ransom, Richard Sutch

One Kind of Freedom examines the economic institutions that replaced slavery and the conditions under which ex-slaves were allowed to enter the economic life of the United States following the Civil War. The authors contend that although the kind of freedom permitted to black Americans allowed substantial increases in their economic welfare, it effectively curtailed further black advancement and retarded Southern economic development. The new edition of this economic history classic includes a new introduction by the authors, an extensive bibliography of works in Southern history published since the appearance of the first edition, and revised findings based on newly available data and statistical techniques.

Review
"Twenty-five years have passed since the first edition of One Kind of Freedom achieved the rare scholarly distinction of setting the terms of debate for an ensuing generation of researchers in an entire field of historical inquiry...[Ransom and Sutch's] core findings hold up remarkably well." Journal of American Ethnic History

"...classic economic history..." Civil War Book Review

"Few works in southern economic history have achieved the level of respect and renown enjoyed by Roger Ransom and Richard Sutch's path-breaking 1977 book One Kind of Freedom: The Economic Consequences of Emancipation...If any single work can be said to have transformed an entire field in history, this is it...One Kind of Freedom is clear, strongly argued, and packs a punch. Moreover, the authors' findings are based on an impressive, indeed, awe-inspiring research base, and their employment and promotion of relatively underutilized sources...was at once innovative and transformative." Peter A. Coclanis, Reviews in American History

"When published in 1977, ^One Kind of Freedom became an instant classic.... The publication of a second edition is a useful reminder of a truly seminal conceptualization of Southern History." Choice

"...clearly written and closely reasoned...One Kind of Freedeom is likely to remain what it has been for a quarter-century now: the single best introduction to the economy of the early postemancipation South." H-Net Reviews

Economics for Historians
By Daniel Jolley
In essence, this is an economic interpretation of Southern history in the late nineteenth century based primarily on statistical data. The authors began this project when they noticed the scarcity of scholarship concerning the economic institutions which took the place of slavery in the South; they felt it necessary for the understanding of the Negro experience to understand the manner in which the Negro entered into a nonbinding economic lifestyle in the years after the War Between the States and Reconstruction. A primary concern of the authors was the economic malaise of the South agriculturally and certainly industrially in the period from 1865 to 1914, a time of impressive economic growth elsewhere in the nation.
The authors devote much of their study to a region they define as the Cotton South, wherein they see homogeneous development. They stress the fact that they are economists and not historians--political, social, and cultural history are beyond the scope of this book. While the authors may at times refer to economic effects of noneconomic forces, they make no attempt to do anything more than offer an economic interpretation of the post-emancipation South; that alone signifies their contribution to the historical field. In the end, they give their ideas as to the evolution of a Southern economy that exploited farmers--white and black--and allowed for little or no industrial development.

Excellenty arranged & great to read
By The Metatron
I was a student of Dr. Ransom at the University of California, Riverside, and I majored in history. Though Dr. Ransom generally is considered an economist, he--more than anyone I've ever read or heard lecture--is able to articulate and present economics within its proper historical parameters, and show you exactly how, for example, whatever historical event is occurring, this is how it affected the world--the people--economically.

Global Business Regulation
By Emma Rudkin
This book adds to the already overflowing subject of globalisation, but giving a distinctly unique edge by looking at it with regards to regulatory issues.
The style is largely academic and the book works better as a "tool-kit" rather than a text that would be read from cover to cover. This is acknowledged by the authors who recommend which parts are most pertinent, given the areas that the reader is most interested in. The structure of the book aids this approach as it is hevaily broken down into sections: an introduction, a look at relevant cases and analysis of those cases.
The cases are most interesting, with a wide variety of subject areas covered from drugs to transportation. Each subject has been researched deeply by the authors who carried out many interviews with important actors in the world of global business regulation before writing the book, and they give interesting and thought provoking accounts.
Overall, the book is probably the best in its field but the size can be a little daunting and the amount of material which the authors cover. Unless the reader has a specific interest in this field and can just use this book as a refernce, it can seem a little laboured and boring.

This book combines three influential and much-quoted books Savannah Syncopators; Blacks, Whites and Blues and Recording the Blues, updated with additional new essays, which collectively confront the problem of how, when and from where the blues emerged and developed. It emphasizes the significance of the African heritage, the mutuality of much white and black music and the role of recording in consolidating the blues. Redressing some of the misconceptions that persist in writing on African-American music, it will be essential reading for all enthusiasts of blues, jazz and country music.

Esau's Tears: Modern Anti-Semitism and the Rise of the Jews, by Albert S. Lindemann

Esau's Tears explores the rise of modern racial-political anti-Semitism in Europe and the United States. Previous histories have been more concerned with description than analysis and most have lacked balance. The evidence presented in this volume suggests that anti-Semitism in these years was more ambiguous than usually presented, less pervasive and central to the lives of both Jews and non-Jews, and by no means clearly pointed to a rising hatred of Jews everywhere, even less to the likelihood of mass murder. Hatred of Jews was not as mysterious or incomprehensible as often presented, but may be related to the differing perceptions of the rise of the Jews in modern times.

From Library Journal
In this very thorough interpretive history, Lindemann (history, Univ. of California at Santa Barbara) traces anti-Semitism from approximately 1870 until the rise of Hitler. Lindemann argues provocatively that with the rise of Jews in intellectual matters, politics, and commerce, a modern ideology of anti-Semitism likewise arose, aimed primarily at curbing what its advocates perceived as "the power of the Jews." Lindemann argues that this new anti-Semitism likewise varied in intensity from country to country and was usually not a central factor in the lives of either Jews or Gentiles. The most interesting section discusses the relationship between 19th-century socialism and anti-Semitism. Written in a popular style, this book can be recommended for both larger public libraries and academic libraries.?Mark Weber, Kent State Univ. Lib., Ohio

From Kirkus Reviews
A richly informative, if highly problematic, overview of anti- Jewish bigotry and violence between the 1870s, when the term ``anti-Semitism'' was coined, and the Holocaust. Lindemann (History/Univ. of Calif., Santa Barbara), who has written previously on Dreyfus and other anti-Semitic cases, here focuses largely on Germany and France, with lesser attention to Russia, Great Britain, the US, Italy, Hungary, and Romania. (Curiously, a section on the interwar years almost entirely omits Poland, a country with a deep anti-Semitic tradition.) He correctly posits an indirect line between the racist anti-Semitism that characterized the beginning of the period and what Daniel Goldhagen calls the ``eliminationist'' ethos that led to the Holocaust. Lindemann also makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of both long-term socioeconomic and short-term political contingencies behind the expression of anti-Semitism. He reveals the ``comparative quality and texture in expressions of anti-Jewish sentiment'' by demonstrating that most major anti-Semites and philo-Semites were more complex than their labels would indicate. However, Lindemann's penchant for nuance ultimately takes its toll. While there is an indisputable correlation between the rise of Jewish power and influence during the 19th and 20th centuries and the intensification of political and intellectual anti-Semitism, the author comes very close to suggesting that there is a clear-cut causal relationship between the two. Thus, he refers to modern anti-Semitism as ``transparently an ideology of revenge'' and alludes to the supposed ``Jewish sense of superiority (including certain kinds of measurable Jewish superiority) and the envy/hatred it has engendered.'' Finally, Lindemann, who calls for scholars to engage in a nonpolemical study of anti-Semitism, himself lapses into highly charged statements and rhetorical questions in an odd, rambling conclusion. There's much provocative, compelling material here, but the author's conclusions are too often contradictory or unpersuasive. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
"Albert S. Lindemann has touched raw nerves with Esau's Tears....[This] is the real context of the controversy stirred by Esau's Tears: Lindemann's unwillingness to allow the victimology racket to proceed unchallenged." Paul Gottfried, Chronicles

"Lindemann has amassed a large amount of useful information, and his call for a more complex and dispassionate historical understanding of antisemitism is welcome." Choice

"Lindemann's richness and subtlety are difficult to overstate....Esau's Tears is a superior sourcebook for students of anti-Semitism and a brilliant analytical work, chock-full of original ideas, concepts and well-balanced interpretations." Susan Zuccotti, The Nation

"...a work of immense sweep and ambition....merely to call the book 'provocative' would be to understate the intensity of the criticism it is likely to attract....readers and reviewers should bear in mind the author's record as an able, serious scholar whose sincere intention it is to contribute to our understanding of antisemitism." H-Antisemitism, H-NET

"...profoundly biased and ignominious..." Robert S. Wistrich, Commentary

"...a work which tries to be as open-minded as possible about a subject which does not lend itself to such treatment, and to a very high degree it succeeds in this task. Any fair-minded reader will be impressed by the way in which Lindemann tackles taboo after taboo in the litany of anti-Semitic historiography and, basing himself scrupulously on scholarly research, reveals a much more complex picture...without ever trying to excuse the anti-Semitism or the anti-Semite." Steven Beller, Times Literary Supplement

"This survey of anti-Semitism in the 50 years preceding the rise of the Nazis is sure to generate controversy.... Lindemann displays a wide breadth of history and of the historical literature." Publishers Weekly

"A richly informative...overview of anti-Jewish bigotry and violence between the 1870s, when the term 'anti-Semitism' was coined, and the Holocaust....There's much provocative, compelling material here." Kirkus Reviews

"Esau's Tears is lucidly written and the drama of the subject easily holds the reader's attention. The book raises troubling issues that have sometimes been downplayed or ignored, and in this it performs a service." The Washington Times

"elegantly written" Holocaust & Genocide

scholarly but readable
By Patrick Killelea
I really enjoyed this book and feel it has greatly deepened my understanding of anti-semitism in Europe before WWII. Still, there were a few disappointing things.
First, it did not cover the psychology of anti-semitism in any detail. I am firmly convinced that the separation demanded by Jewish religion is the primary cause of anti-semitism, simply because of the implied insult to the majority culture. At the same time, that separation is essential to Jewish continuity, pride, and the resulting success. The he pride and success in turn contribute to anti-semitism, but would not be a problem without the continuing choice to remain separate. If Jews would stop being separate, they would gradually stop being hated, but they would no longer be Jews, either. It's an uncomfortable situation for Jews, dealt with mostly by denying that there is any inherent insult in the traditional refusal to socialize, eat together, and intermarry. I sympathize, because Judaism is a beautiful tradition and has a coherent message if you accept the principle of separation. Lindemann covers this indirectly in pointing out that Jews were generally less hated where they accepted the majority culture more, such as in Hungary, Italy, and the US.
Second, I found the book a bit long-winded and repetitive, but I guess that was part of his point: that there needs to be a truly detailed, analytical, and comparative examination of anti-semitism in the various countries of Europe and how those changed in the years leading up to the Holocaust.
Third, I was disappointed that very little mention was made of the Armenian Genocide, which occurred in exactly the years he studies. He even mentions the Turks several times, but not the Genocide. Talk about wonderful comparative material! It just doesn't get any better: ancient minority of different religion, language, and "race", rises dramatically both socially and economically, then is massacred by insecure majority during a time of social and political turbulence. Exactly the same dynamics.
Let me see if I can summarize Lindemann's points (which would probably horrify him because he's fighting over-simplification):
1. Most study of anti-semitism ignores possible Jewish causes. 2. Some anti-semitism was a response to real Jewish actions. 3. Dispassionate analysis of anti-semitism is itself seen as anti-semitic.
I think that's all basically true...

This is an excellent source of the history of anti-semitism because it is well sourced in footnotes, and because it gives a much more objective full context throughout history as to the complicated causes of this phenomena.

Keynes's mathematical model is in chapters 10,20,and 21
By Michael Emmett Brady
U Maki, the editor of this volume of collected essays, has included far too many essays which are long on fiction and very short on the facts. Two of the essays essentially provide fictional accounts of what John Maynard Keynes accomplished in the General Theory(GT).These essays are essay number 3,written by P. Dasgupta and essay number 8,written by M.Morgan.On pp.74-76,the reader is informed that Keynes had no mathematical model that analyzed the role played by involuntary unemployment in his theory of effective demand. On pp.187-195,which covers section 3,titled"Modeling Keynes's General Theory",the reader is told that Keynes had no model of his general theory in the GT.Morgan starts out as if she intends to cover Meade's 1937 model which is in fact very similar to the model presented by Keynes in chapters 10,20 and 21 of the GT,the major differences being (1)that Keynes did not include a variable to represent interest rates and (2)that Keynes incorporates expectational effects by shifting curves while Meade incorporates expectational effects by changing the elasticity(shapes) of the curves themselves.Meade's paper derives results which are very close to the results derived by Keynes,i.e.,an unemployment equilibrium representing the amount of involuntary unemployment qualitatively in a formal mathematical model.Keynes's comment on Meade's paper was that there was nothing with which he disagreed.Morgan NEVER attempts to analyze either Meade's model or Meade's results.Instead, she starts talking about the basic assumptions of Meade's model, which are the standard assumptions of the perfect/pure competition model.Meade left out the word "pure" and wrote "perfect" only. However, this is of no major consequence as far as the mathematical modeling of either Keynes or Meade was concerned. The results of Morgan's paper are incoherent. There is a very simple way ,for either P.Dasgupta or M.Morgan ,to obtain the original mathematical model of the general theory presented by Keynes in the GT.The reader of the GT needs to be able to integrate(take the antiderivative of) the derivatives that Keynes presented in his formal analysis on pp.55-56,ft.2,pp.280-286,pp.304-306 and pp.271-278.These last mentioned pages refer to Keynes 's explicit discussion of the mathematical differences that existed between his model and the mathematical model of A.C. Pigou, presented in chapters 8-10 of PartII of The Theory of Unemployment(1933).To understand this comparison-contrast,the reader would have had to have already covered these chapters from Pigou's book. The following results can be easily duplicated by any reader or economist who understands differentiation and integration.Keynes's model consists of three functions. The expected aggregate demand function is D =D1+D2=f(N)=pO,where p is an expected price level and O,real output, is a function of N.The expected aggregate supply function is Z= Z1+Z2=g(N)=P+wN,where P is the expected profit,w is the money wage and N represents aggregate employment. The actual or current aggregate demand function is Y =Y(N)=C+I=PO,where C=bY (or C= a+bY)and P denotes the actual price level.(See p.209 of the GT).Solving this system of equations on the assumption that Say's Law holds yields the following solution:w/p= MPL/(MPC +MPI),where MPL equals the marginal product of labor,MPC equals tne marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods,C,and MPI equals the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods,I.The special classical and neoclassical theories(monetarism, supply side, rational expectations, real business cycle, etc.)all require that MPC+MPI=1.This gives the special result that w/p=MPL,where w/p equals the real wage. This condition, which represents the optimality condition for labor market clearing(NO INVOLUNTARY UNEMPLOYMENT)in all classical and neoclassical theories, is identical to the statement thar the macroeconomy is operating on the boundaries of BOTH the dynamic and the static production possibilities frontiers(PPF's).The reader should note that Keynes's general theory of employment is easily generalized to include a government sector, import sector, and export sector.Letting MPG,MPE,and MPM represent the marginal propensities for government spending(public goods),exports, and imports,we obtain w/p=MPL/(MPC+MPI+MPG+MPE-MPM).

Steep Price of Admission but Excellent Work
By J. F. McCord
The value of this work may not match up to its price-point for many, but I found it to be an invaluable introduction to the various modes of thought and theologizing being done outside of first-world contexts. Aiming to serve as an introduction to an overwhelmingly vast and complex field, (the theologies of the majority of Christianity in less than 200 pages?) this book accomplishes what it sets out to do well, providing concise summaries of the various movers and shakers in their respective continent and general directions of the dialogue and study. The short bibliographies concluding each essay provide the unitiated with a helpful path to follow for more in-depth study if so desired. This Western reader was especially forced to reconsider many aspects of hermeneutics, authority and acculteration regarding theology and the timeless message of the Church. All in all, an excellent, if not too brief work that hopefully will not intimidate too many buyers with its high MSRP.

Patterns of Social Capital: Stability and Change in Historical Perspective (Studies in Interdisciplinary History)From Cambridge Universi

Societies work best where citizens trust their fellow citizens, work cooperatively for common goals, and thus share a civic culture. The accumulation of reciprocal trust, as demonstrated by voluntary efforts to create common goods, builds social capital and contributes to effective government. This volume advances the study of social capital across chronological and geographical space. It examines voluntary associations, comparatively and cross-culturally, as indicators of citizen readiness for civic engagement. This book is ultimately about the pattern of social and civic interactions in past times, and how these patterns may no longer exist.
