The Economics of Karl Marx: Analysis and Application (Historical Perspectives on Modern Economics), by Samuel Hollander

This book presents an account and technical assessment of Marx's economic analysis in Capital, with particular reference to the transformation and the surplus-value doctrine, the reproduction schemes, the falling real-wage and profit rates, and the trade cycle. The focus is on criticisms that Marx himself might have been expected to face in his day and age. In addition, it offers a chronological study of the evolution of that analysis from the early 1840s through three "drafts": documents of the late 1840s, the Grundrisse of 1857-1858, and the Economic Manuscripts of 1861-1863. It also provides three studies in application, focusing on Marx's "evolutionary" orientation in his evaluation of the transition to communism and his rejection of "egalitarianism" under both capitalist and communist regimes; his evolving perspective on the role of the industrial "entrepreneur"; and his evolving appreciation of the prospects for welfare reform within capitalism. Throughout, Hollander emphasizes Marx's relation with orthodox canonical classicism.

Review
"This is vintage Hollander: beautifully written, highly opinionated and extremely well researched. It is the culmination of decades of scholarship on classical and post-classical political economy. Many readers will question Hollander's interpretation of Marx as an unsuccessful predecessor of Walras, but few will fail to be stimulated, or provoked, by this book." - John King, La Trobe University

"For those hoping for an understanding of Marx and Marx's economics, the long wait is over. Samuel Hollander has delivered a masterpiece. All of the old disturbing puzzles are revealed and resolved: from value and distribution, to the falling rate of profit, growth and cycle and the thorny and infamous transformation problem itself. From cover-to-cover, the care and breadth of exposition, the insight and the scholarship are nothing short of breathtaking. This is truly a major event for economists, social and political scientists and intellectual historians, and no less a landmark achievement in the history of economic thought. All those interested not only in the historical Marx, but also in the true nature and significance of his work to modern economics and present-day concerns (including Marx on equity, the role of the entrepreneur and the process of social reform) will relish at the turn of every page of this wonderful book." - Tom Kompas, The Australian National University

"How splendid to read a book on Marx that takes him seriously as an economist and plays proper respect to the logical structure of his economic theory... my advice is to read this book and to study it carefully because it is full of insights gathered over a lifetime of study of the classical economists." - Mark Blaug, Journal of the History of Economic Thought

"Whatever one's view of Marx's exploitation theory and the 'continuity thesis,' as well as the many other topics covered in The Economics of Karl Marx, the book remains a superb achievement. The detailed arguments are typically first class, and always well presented.... All in all, this is a fine piece of scholarship of enduring value. Historians of economic thought will benefit most, but scholars from other disciplines will also find Samuel Hollander's book to be an excellent reference source." - Michael Howard, University of Waterloo, Journal of the History of Economic Thought

"Hollander works through... topics with copious and helpful quotations from Marx's texts, which will make the book a very useful resource for students and scholars who want to make a preliminary survey of some aspect of Marx's economic thought. Another pervasive strength of the book is Hollander's knowledge of the classical political economy tradition, which allows him to situate Marx's thought in the matrix of the literature Marx worked from.... It will be well worth the trouble of anyone interested in navigating the huge volume of Marx's writings to consult this book." - Duncan K. Foley, New School for Social Research and Santa Fe Institute, Journal of the History of Economic Thought

Central Europe in the High Middle Ages: Bohemia, Hungary and Poland, c.900-c.1300 (Cambridge Medieval Textbooks), by Nora Berend, Przemys

This groundbreaking comparative history of the early centuries of Bohemia, Hungary and Poland sets the development of each polity in the context of the central European region as a whole. Focusing on the origins of the realms and their development in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the book concludes with the thirteenth century when significant changes in social and economic structures occurred. The book presents a series of thematic chapters on every aspect of the early history of the region covering political, religious, economic, social and cultural developments, including an investigation of origin myths that questions traditional national narratives. It also explores the ways in which west European patterns were appropriated and adapted through the local initiatives of rulers, nobles and ecclesiastics in central Europe. An ideal introduction to the essential themes in medieval central European history, the book sheds important new light on regional similarities and differences.

Review
"This welcome synthesis provides an up to-date history of the High Middle Ages in a region that is too little-known and understood in the Anglophone world. ... This volume, enhanced by three maps, is sure to become the standard in English. Summing up: essential. All levels/libraries."
P. W. Knoll, Choice

"The arrival of this book is more than welcome for those of us teaching medieval history beyond Western Europe ... The amount of work required to produce this must have been immense and the payoff is tremendous for the reader ... Central Europe in the High Middle Ages makes the medieval histories of these three incredibly important medieval polities available to an English language audience of students and scholars, and it will hopefully facilitate the expansion of the idea of medieval Europe throughout college classrooms."
Christian Raffensperger, Speculum

Chemorheology of Polymers: From Fundamental Principles to Reactive Processing, by Peter J. Halley, Graeme A. George

Understanding the dynamics of reactive polymer processes allows scientists to create new, high value, high performance polymers. Chemorheology of Polymers provides an indispensable resource for researchers and practitioners working in this area, describing theoretical and industrial approaches to characterising the flow and gelation of reactive polymers. Beginning with an in-depth treatment of the chemistry and physics of thermoplastics, thermoset and reactive polymers, the core of the book focuses on fundamental characterization of reactive polymers, rheological (flow characterization) techniques and the kinetic and chemorheological models of these systems. Uniquely, the coverage extends to a complete review of the practical industrial processes used for these polymers and an insight into the current chemorheological models and tools used to describe and control each process. This book will appeal to polymer scientists working on reactive polymers within materials science, chemistry and chemical engineering departments as well as polymer process engineers in industry.

"Brown provides an excellent reference manual for flutists who wish to perform the historical flute repertory with taste and with attention to the national stylistic differences in musical cultures as diverse as those of France, Italy, and Germany. The Cambridge History of Greek and Roman Warfare (Volume 1)From Cambridge University Press

Warfare was the single biggest preoccupation of historians in antiquity. In recent decades fresh textual interpretations, numerous new archaeological discoveries and a much broader analytical focus emphasising social, economic, political and cultural approaches have transformed our understanding of ancient warfare. Volume I of this two-volume History reflects these developments and provides a systematic account, written by a distinguished cast of contributors, of the various themes underlying the warfare of the Greek world from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period and of Early and Middle Republican Rome. For each broad period developments in troop-types, equipment, strategy and tactics are discussed. These are placed in the broader context of developments in international relations and the relationship of warfare to both the state and wider society. Numerous illustrations, a glossary and chronology, and information about the authors mentioned supplement the text. This will become the primary reference work for specialists and non-specialists alike.

A Book of Essays
By Daniel Weitz
I have just finished reading the first volume of the two, and the review is written based upon the first book. In spite of the title this is NOT a history of Greek and Roman Warfare, but rather a series of essays organized according to topic. The quality of the writing varies enormously, from the superb prose of Lendon to the difficult and almost unreadable essays by Hornblower and Hall. The best essays are those by Hanson(historiography of ancient warfare) Whitby (reconstructing ancient Wrfare) Strauss (Naval Combat and sieges) Billows (international relations) Sekunda (Land forces) Roth(War) Sabin(land battles) Serrati (Warfare and the state). The organization of this volume is peculiar, and to me non-intuitive (yet it seems to be the new style adopted by Cambridge University Press as can be seen in their volumes on 17th century philosophy) Because it is divided into sections and each into chapters that mirror the previous section there is a vacuum of background information or continuity. It is vital to have a deep knowledge of the period (as well as deep pockets to afford the book!) and a handbook such as Montagu's "Battles of the Greek and Roman Worlds" available.

The bibliography is superb, the maps are good, the illustrations poor. At this price it is disgraceful that they are black and white, and some of are of the poorest quality of reproduction. P. 384 has a photo of the Via Appia that looks as if it was photocopied out of a 1950's school textbook!P.427 "Legion vs Phalanx at Pydna" is too small and lacking in contrast to understand the detail, and the reproductions of Greek pottery are sad.

Yet this is a very illuminating volume.

Athena Unbound: The Advancement of Women in Science and Technology, by Henry Etzkowitz, Carol Kemelgor, Brian Uzzi

Why are there still so few female scientists? Despite the scientific ethos of universalism and inclusion, women continue to experience real social inequities as they struggle to gain recognition in the scientific community. Based on extensive interviews and backed by quantitative analysis, this compelling work exposes the hidden barriers, subtle exclusions, and unwritten rules that confront women at every juncture along the scientific career path--from childhood to retirement. Through vivid personal accounts the authors offer an illuminating and sobering view of the effects these obstacles have on the personal and professional lives of women. They argue that women can succeed in the scientific workplace by successfully managing "social capital," those networks and relationships scientists rely on for professional support and new ideas. This benchmark volume is vital reading for all scientists and social scientists--both male and female--and for women considering a scientific career.

From Booklist
This in-depth inquiry into why there are so few women scientists isn't the first study of its kind, nor is it likely to be the last. Certainly advancements have been made since such famous pioneers as Lise Meitner and Rachel Carson faced blatant resistance to their quests. More girls and young women study science than ever before, resulting in a notable increase in the number of women science graduate students, yet, compared to their male colleagues, few go on to achieve professional success. Etzkowitz and his coauthors, Carol Kemelgor and Brian Uzzi, conducted numerous interviews with women and men to determine the difference in their academic and professional experiences, and they have identified some subtle and insidious factors that contribute to women scientists' marginalization. The authors balance their extremely detailed analysis with a humanistic perspective as they compare and contrast the status of women scientists in different countries, characterize both exclusionary and supportive forms of networking, and, ultimately, offer some surprising and hopeful conclusions. Booklist

"...a timely contribution. While the book's focus is on academic science, it can claim greater breadth because of its concern with 'the quality of women's experience in academic science,' including how they are educated in college and graduate school...Athena Unbound makes some important suggestions. Now is the time to act upon them." Chemical & Engineering News

"I found Athena Unbound so gripping that I read it in one sitting. I expect that many women scientists, and their families, will find that it articulates as a general problem issues they have encountered in their own careers." American Scientist Sept-Oct 2001

"The eye-opening text draws upon various studies and surveys and hundreds of interviews with science students and faculty and presents recommendations for reform, especially in academia." Northwestern Summer 2001

"There's much to like in this book" Chemical & Engineering News

"The authors are to be applauded for helping to keep the unique challenges of women in science at the forefront of social consciousness." CELL May 2001

More like a research paper than a book
By A Customer
I picked this book for my engineering ethics class thinking how great it would be to read about the experience of other females in engineering. To my dismay the book was slow and repetitive. The books studies white American women in science. The data through out the book is presented in a rough research paper like format. This is not a peasant to read book. If you can identify with white American women in the scientific field, then read this book. Otherwise the focus of this book is too narrow and the authors of the book does not present any practical solutions to the problems encountered by women in the scientific field.

Best in class for women in science books
By Laura L. Mays Hoopes
I probably have read every book on women in science for the last thirty years or so, and I regret that so many are data-rich to the point of unreadability. Athena Unbound is a refreshing exception; it delves into situations of women who marry and have children, situations of women whose mentors do not mentor them, and many other difficulties women experience when trying to become and stay scientists. I read this one all the way through in one sitting, then read it again slower to savor all of its insights. I recommend it very highly, up there with the older but still zingy Vivian Gornick, Women in Science.

Athena Unbound
By A Customer
I read this book with tremendous interest. The stories it contains resonated in me or seemed to fit friends and colleagues. I have given Athena Unbound to family members upon graduation (from engineering school) and to my own women Chemistry students for graduation. I think it is important for my students to know what problems may lie before them and how they may be side-stepped. This book does a great job of outlining what these problems may be. Science is still a man's world. Forewarned is forearmed!

Renaissance Clothing and the Materials of Memory (Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture), by Ann Rosalind Jones, Peter S

In Renaissance Clothing and the Materials of Memory Jones and Stallybrass argue that the making and transmission of fabrics and clothing were central to the making of Renaissance culture. Their examination explores the role of clothes as forms of memory transmitted from master to servant, from friend to friend, from lover to lover. This book offers a close reading of literary texts, paintings, textiles, theatrical documents, and ephemera to reveal how clothing and textiles were crucial to gender, sexuality, and religion in the Renaissance.

Review
'In their beautifully conceived, well made, and copiously illustrated book, Jones and Stallybrass think out what it might mean to put on clothes in Renaissance society, on English stages, and for portraiture ... They have written a brilliant, multidisciplinary, and thoroughly original book that is a pleasure to read.' Modern Language Association

'This superb book reinterprets the construction of identities, whether social or sexual, power relations, the fabrication of memory, and the writing of drama during the Renaissance from the perspective of the fabrication and commerce in clothing. Built on analyses dazzling for their knowledge and adroitness (for example, the study of Velazquez's painting 'Les Hilanderas', of the changing figure of Penelope, or of the circulation of garments among the aristocracy, the theatre companies, and pawnbrokers), this work demonstrates the richness of an approach focused on the materiality of symbolic forms.' Annales

'... erudite, substantial, and engaging ... offers a fresh perspective both on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and on our own assumptions ... assembles and presents far more fascinating information than I can do justice here ... While the authors generously facilitate selective reading, by providing a helpful introduction and informative titles for chapter subsections, this is a book that repays reading cover to cover.' CNN Money

'Jones and Stallybrass argue cogently and clearly, switching genre and medium easily but stitching the raw materials into a coherent and impressive whole ... this work should become both key in its own right and influential in suggesting a new approach to the study of the period overall.' Early Modern Literary Studies

not for the faint of heart - a heavy read
By Bridgette MacLean
This is definately an academic exercise in social history. For a researcher of the MINDSET of the Renaissance it is invaluable.
A costumer solely looking for color photographs will be disappointed. Information from inventories, wills, and monographs is limited.
For people looking for a sound and expansive biblioography on clothing issues, this book provides one.

Not "History," but Useful
By Jeff Heeren
It has been said that "the clothing makes the man," and in Renaissance Clothing and the Materials of Memory, Ann Jones and Peter Stallybrass seek to determine the validity of this statement. To examine the impressions that were crucial to the creation and recreation of concepts of status, gender, sexuality, and religion in the Renaissance, and to reconcile the conflicting significance of clothing during the Renaissance - clothing as a physical representation of the wearer, and clothing as a financial investment - the authors examine a number of unusual and original sources, including literary texts, paintings, embroidery and theatrical presentations. Though clothing could be a good way to invest money (the authors point out that many nobles were commodity rich and cash poor) and to maintain power over subordinates (a gift of clothing would serve to bind a servant to the master more firmly than a gift of money), the authors believe that clothing was important during the Renaissance for other reasons. Jones and Stallybrass come to the conclusion that during this period clothing served as a "material memory system"; clothing was the method by which people were reminded who they were and where they belonged in the hierarchy of society. Essentially, the clothing that people chose to wear "fashioned" them into the person that entered in the social realm. Items such as cloaks, armor, and heraldic symbols could indicate ones social situation; the removal of such markers, however, would return the individual to the naked anonymity that Adam and Eve sought to escape.
As Jones and Stallybrass argue, "livery was a form of incorporation...that inscribed obligation and indebtedness upon the body. As cloth exchanged hands, it bound people in networks of obligation" (20). The concept and use of livery, which was defined as "the payment of dependents in food, lodging and clothing" (19), clearly fits with the various methods of gifting that are examined in "The Gift in Sixteen Century France" and "Convents and the Body Politic." All three texts deal with the use of gifts to establish a hierarchy of power and exchange; "Renaissance Clothing" describes another method of exchange - clothing in return for service. When a noble gave clothing to a servant, it was a physical guarantee of the noble's protection, while it bound the receiver of the gift more firmly to the giver than a simple payment in cash ever could.

Excellent Resource
By Rhea M. Hebert
This book is an excellent resource on early modern culture in England. As some scholars have pointed out, the "Renaissance" in the title is a bit vague; this book is concerned with England and its relationship with clothing. The book is equally valuable for art historians, literary scholars, and theatre work. The various chapters focus on one or two ways in which clothes affected the English cultural scene. I have found this book invaluable as I continue working on a research project that involves representations of individuals in art and society, and the more general topic of visual and textual intersections in English society.

Good for beginners and as quick review
By Alex
This piece is a good compilation. I have yet to thoroughly study each passage, but I have covered many. Some pieces do not at first appear to fit in (and perhaps they don't- I could very well be crazy), but after pulling yourself back from a linear view it comes together nicely. It is true that many sections of this compilation can be found elsewhere if you look so I recomend it for anyone looking for the essence of concepts set down by past leaders in the field.
