Forget Nexium or NyQuil - THIS book is the best cure for insomnia.

Let me sum it up in 2 sentances - (1) There are countries in this world with more than one nationality within their borders. (2) From Spain's enclave of Basques to Iraq's Kurd, Shia, and Sunni populations, these countries will be the future scene of conflict.

About the Author
Dewey H. Hodges is a professor of aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has been the principal or co-principal investigator for more than 45 externally sponsored research projects in the fields of aeroelasticity, structural mechanics, rotorcraft dynamics, finite element analysis, and computational optimal control. In recent years, his research group has been developing methods for accurate analysis of and stress recovery in composite beams, including helicopter and wind turbine rotor blades, plates and shells. The computer programs VABS (for composite beams) and VAPAS (for composite plates and shells) are in use around the world. He has published four books and more than 190 technical papers in refereed journals. Professor Hodges is a Fellow of the American Helicopter Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Fluids and Structures, the Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures, and Nonlinear Dynamics.

The late G. Alvin Pierce was Professor Emeritus in the School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was the co-author of Introduction to Structural Dynamics and Aeroelasticity, with Dewey H. Hodges (2002).

Decent product but a bit expensive

Was very easy to install. The only cons for this item I can think of are that it is a bit expensive and that to open the basket, the front side needs to be bent outwards and only then can the bottom hook go through.

Decent book that explains theory. Somewhat vague.

This book does a decent job displaying the theories and equations for introductory structural dynamics. However it is lacking detailed explanation and step by step processes of how to derive and use the theories displayed. I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you needed it for a class, or you were doing graduate level work that did not require a lot of explanation.

A close look at everyday Roman life

This is a masterwork by Dr. Wilhelmina Feemster Jashemski and Frederick G. Meyer that looks at the Roman cities destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 AD from the perspective of the Bay of Naples area's natural environment of the time. The many color plates in this large work also portray the artwork that was preserved in hundreds of houses and public buildings in Pompeii and Herculaneum. But the real focus of the book is the landscape, gardens, and fauna that existed in the Roman period. Millions of natural, as well as man-made, objects were preserved in the molten ash that fell on those towns and the authors have provided hundreds of illustrations of these items which add up to a comprehensive look at Pompeii's everyday surroundings--street, garden and rural hinterland. It's an amazing work the will be of interest to anyone who is a student of Roman history, architecture, botany or horticulture.

Dr. Jashemski is a professor emeritus of the University of Maryland which is currently involved in the excavation of the last town major town still completely covered by Vesuvian ash--Stabiiae. The potential to find some spectacular artworks on that site is considerable as it was the most upscale neighborhood on the Bay of Naples in that period.

For the scholar or serious student

Partly art history, partly botany and zoology, and partly forensics, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF POMPEII is a beautiful comprehensive work including the writings of archeologists and others who have examined the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum with the goal of establishing the nature of daily life as lived by the inhabitants of the two doomed settlements. This collection of scholarly papers was assembled into a fine book edited by W.F. Jashemski and Frederick Meyer. Jashemski is Professor Emeritus of Ancient History at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she pioneered the field of ancient Roman garden archeology, and a former senior fellow at Dumbarton Oaks in DC which houses a wonderful collection of Pre-Columbian Art as well as stunningly landscaped grounds. Dr. Meyer is the former Supervisory Botanist in charge of the Herbarium at the National Arboretum also in Washington DC.

Selected chapters from the book cover a description of the site before the eruption in A.D. 79 based on the archeological, literary and Epigraphical Evidence. We know some of what we know about the fateful day owing to correspondence between Tacitus and Pliny the Younger, whose uncle Pliny the Elder perished in the catastrophe. Other chapters cover the flora and fauna of the area (both Pompeii and Herculaneum were affected). Archeologists have determined the identity of extensive numbers of plants (including trees, vines, edible foodstuffs and culinary and medicinal herbs), mammals, amphibians and reptiles, birds (grey parrots and love birds were kept as pets).

The book is filled with drawings and illustrations, as well as photographs of human and other animal, and plant remains; frescos from the villas and public buildings; jewelry and household items; and site shots including photos of the area surrounding the forum in Pompeii (including those taken from a balloon - with buildings clearly marked), as well as pictures of the archeologists at work capturing and preserving the natural material uncovered at the two sites.

If you are about to embark on a trip to Pompeii, have an interest in Roman life as it was lived in the first century, or an interest in archeological forensics, you will find this book enlightening, but perhaps it is more suitable for the Art History or Classics section of a school library than a coffee table book as one of my colleagues suggested.

Great Overview of Natural History

Jashemski has worked for many years in Pompeii's gardens - and produced many publications. This volume not only brings together a summary of all of her work, it is complemented by robust ancilliary studies from experts in paleosols, pollen and fauna. Beautiful pictures, well-referenced - an academic book that also is of interest to other readers. THE must have of all Pompeii publications in recent times.

The Amsterdam Connection

The Amsterdam Connection is a mysterious story. It is about the reporter Kate Jensen who traveled to Amsterdam where her friend, Max, was found dead there. The police in Amsterdam concluded that Max was killed by a pickpocker. But Kate didn't believe. She thought it had something more than that. Then, she decided to prove it by her self and she found that her friend's dead involved with the football club. From this even, Kate thought that even football is fun but it can be dangerous at the same time.

This book is one story that can draw the reader to follow till the end. It makes the reader thinks of the mystery all the time. The reader will guess who is the murderer through the story. However, it is less exciting, when compare to other mysterious books.

I liked the character of Kate in this story because she ...

‘The Amsterdam Connection’ is quite an interesting book and it is a thriller story. This is about a news reporter Kate who traveled to Amsterdam to find out about the mystery behind her friend Max’s death. The Amsterdam police came to a conclusion that Max was mugged and killed during a mugging incident but Kate didn't believe because Max had asked her to come visit and write about the ‘Rotterdam City Football Club’, soon after that he is killed by someone so decided that there is some person behind her friend’s murder. I liked the character of Kate in this story because she is very interested to find the reason about her friend’s death, also she gave more importance to her friend Max because he saved her life during some criminal reporting situation. I felt few characters are real Kate, Max, Elly and Jos. When it comes to the story of it, this is about how she found the mystery about who killed Max and Jos Van with the help of Elly, Sanchez.

Portuguese: A Linguistic Introduction Review

I used this book in an undergraduate seminar on Portuguese Linguistics. This book is very similar to Azevedo's text "Introducción a la lingüística española" Introduccion A La Linguistica Espanola (3rd Edition) (Spanish Edition), right down to the weaker sections. Overall this book provides a decent introduction to Portuguese linguistics. Some of the core chapters are rather weak (especially phonology and syntax). it is a very interesting read, and, again, accessible to English speakers.

It is one of the only books written in English on Portuguese Linguistics, but an updated, edited edition is in order.

An extremely accessible, readable, lucid introduction to both applied linguistics and the Portuguese language

I wish I had found this sooner. It would have been a useful resource for my graduate students in applied linguistics. The focus we chose in our seminar, of preparing ESL materials for Brasilian students and visitors to the U.S. is the "inverse" of the the author's attempt to provide a thorough linguistics-based orientation for English-speakers learning Portuguese. Nevertheless, valuable comparisons can be found throughout this very amenable introduction to linguistics for ESL or EFL teachers who are English-speakers with limited to no knowledge of Portuguese who are attempting to anticipate useful comparisons or as I have decided to call them to avoid the pejorative impression given by talking about "contrasts/conflicts"---"opportunities for clarification".

As possible areas of need for clarification are identified through error analysis of the learners' "interlanguage", this thorough contrastive study provides the vocabulary and information needed to be able to provide guidance to English speakers learning Portuguese, and with some further inference and experience to support reversing the direction of the analysis, to assist Portuguese speakers who are further refining their command of English as a Foreign or Second Language.

I do not dispute the previous reviewer's concerns about inaccuracies in a few details regarding differences in European and Brasilian Portuguese, as I certainly lack any credentials to judge that. I did notice a few minor typographical/copy-editing errors of the sort that seem to plague everything that has been published in the last twenty years, but that hardly inclines me to blame the author, who probably had little or no opportunity to review every page and line of the final copy.

Nevertheless, after spending "time and treasure" trudging through a number of other sources, none of which were accessible to novice students of applied linguistics, few of which were readable for those who like to read with their eyes open, and none of which could be described as "lucid", much less useful for practical purposes...I certainly cannot find justification for rating this as less than a 5-star career achievement for the author and a positive delight for me as a reader and as a lecturer seeking useful examples of applied linguistics which fulfill some of the promise of that approach, with few of the defects of other writers who lack the ability to select and relate the pertinent aspects of a field of study which has evolved in a series of wild gyrations between intriguing theories and practical misuses.

It could be better

This book contains a good deal of relevant information, but its impressive linguistic jargon may distract from the book's defects.

A rather irritating feature is that a Latin language like Portuguese is analyzed from an Anglophone angle. Where it does not fit, it is 'wrong', as particularly evident in the distorted treatment given to the 'se indeterminado'.

Claimed contrasts between Brazilian and European Portuguese are erratic and full of incorrect statements. The expression 'a gente' appears in this book as a Brazilian Portuguese vulgar alternative to the 1st person plural, overlooking the fact that it is equally and widely used in Portugal. At the most elementary level, this book has yet to learn that the European Portuguese for bathroom is not 'casa de banhos' but 'casa de banho'.

I was also disappointed with the pages on forms of address. Inaccuracies are everywhere, e.g., using 'tu' for maids in Portugal would not be an expression of solidarity as the book tells you but a way of talking down to them.

This takes me to something else I find rather irritating. In the bibliography at the end of the book plenty of minor works are included but some key works are missing. Unfortunate lapse!

In the chapter on forms of address the book states that a study has not been carried out yet on this topic. What about the excellent analysis by Manuela Cook, Uma teoria das formas de tratatmento na lingua portuguesa, published by Georgetown University in Hispania in 1997. This book should know about it!

Summing up, there is some good information in this book, but it could be better. It could be much better.

About the Author
Flint Beal is Anne Parrish Titzell Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and Director of Neurology at the New York Presbyterian Cornell Campus. An internationally recognized authority on neurodegenerative disorders, his research has focused on the mechanism of neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Anthony Lang is Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology, University of Toronto. A founding member of the Parkinson Study Group and the Movement Disorders Society, his research has included clinical trials of poorly recognized neurological disorders, clinical trials of new therapeutic modalities, and studies in molecular biology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology and imaging.

Albert Ludolph is Professor of Neurology, Chair of Neurology, and Chairman of the Neuroscience Center of the University of Ulm, Germany. A neurologist and psychiatrist, his major interest is in toxicological models of vulnerability and genetic models for the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases.

About the Author
Les Kirkup is Associate Professor in the School of Physics and Advanced Materials, University of Technology, Sydney. A dedicated lecturer, many of his educational developments have focused on enhancing the laboratory experience of undergraduate students. In May 2011, he was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Council National Teaching Fellowship.

An Excellent Reference Book

This is quite a large book with loads of information in it. If you use excel for anything beyond simple adding and subtracting, you will find useful advice in here. Well worth the price.

A disappointing book

This is an introductory book on Excel for physical scientists. Cambridge University Press deserves a compliment for a beautifully produced volume. Unfortunately, its contents are disappointing, because the text contains serious errors and omissions. The most obvious error is the statement, on page 308, that Excel does not provide built in facilities for fitting equations to data using nonlinear least squares. Excel does provide these, in the form of Solver, but the reader will look in vain for any mention of Solver in this book. (Figure 9.1 on page 365 shows that the author indeed has not bothered to activate the Solver Add-in.) The most serious omission is that the existence of user-definable functions and macros is not mentioned either. This leaves out two of the most powerful features of Excel: nonlinear least squares, and user programmability.

Another major problem with this book is that it doesn't show the reader how to use the spreadsheet effectively, but often goes out of its way to make easy things difficult. The almost exclusive emphasis in this book is on least squares methods, yet these are handled quite clumsily. On page 244, e.g., the linear correlation coefficient is computed from its formula by calculating the necessary sums, rather than by taking advantage of the fact that Linest, Regression, and Trendline all provide this parameter or its square. On page 284 the reader is shown the matrix algebra for fitting data to a parabola, and then told that "The built in matrix functions of Excel are well suited to estimating parameters in linear least squares problems", as if Linest, Regression, and Trendline are not there to take care of such tedious data manipulations. Likewise, on page 290, the user is not informed that Linest and Regression can also do multivariate analysis, but instead is instructed to do this the hard way, again by setting up and solving matrix equations. It is as if the author hasn't quite figured out yet that the spreadsheet has several built-in facilities specifically designed to make such least squares problems user-friendly.

In comparison with other books vying for the scientific spreadsheet market it is difficult to come up with any area in which Kirkup's book has the edge over its competitors: Billo (2nd ed., Wiley, 2001), Bloch (2nd ed., Wiley, 2003), de Levie (Oxford, 2004), Gottfried (2nd ed., McGraw-Hill, 2002), Liengme (3rd ed., Newnes, 2002), and Orvis (2nd ed., Sybex, 1996) all provide much more useful information, and don't make their readers jump through unnecessary hoops either.

A must for engineering statistics

If you are doing an engineering statistics course this book is of a hell of a lot more value than Engineering Statistics by Hubele, Montgomery and Runger.
This book teaches you how to do statistics using excel.
Should be aplicable for most statistics but is of great
assistance if your doing Engineering statistics and get stuck without much support.
