The editor and translator Annabel Brett is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College. Her previous publications include Liberty, Right and Nature: Individual Rights in Later Scholastic Thought (Cambridge, 1997).

An Essential Treatise on Modern Political Thought

Marsilius was by day a physician but had developed insight into the collapse of the papacy in Avignon that inspired this work. In many ways this is the first of what we see as contemporary political thought. Marsilius was also well educated in Theology at Paris and had been exposed to the governing methodologies of the Italian City States. In addition he was responding to the ever encroaching power usurped via the fraudulent doctrine promulgated by the Donation of Constantine and the two swords theory. For Marsilius the papacy at best was focused on the church while Government represented the people.
This document is an excellent and readable translation. It does read as a 14th century document, with structure somewhat akin to the Scholastic, but is no where the rigid structure of an Aquinas. It is a must read for anyone interested in political science and its development. The book is well done and well presented.
In addition this should be read in conjunction with Ockham and his Work of Ninety Days. Both place the Avignon papacy in clear perspective.
