An Important New Interpretation of Raphael's Stanza

Raphael's "School of Athens" is one of the best-known works of art in the Western world, yet it has been little understood until now. Many figural attributions, which appear in the standard art history textbooks, are either conjectural or just plain wrong. And even the best of these former writings, have not carefully considered the relationship of the "School of Athens" to Raphael's other three paintings in the same room. Fortunately, Dr. Joost-Gaugier has written this book to set us all straight. Her scholarship is impeccable, and she considers the Stanza in the full context - historical, artistic, literary, and philosophical - of its time. Her book will appeal to many different audiences - art historians, students, scholars, and really anyone who is interested in the art and thought of the Renaissance.

badly undermined by evasion

I looked forward to reading this work, but was disappointed by the tendentiousness of the author and apparent evasion of aspects of these paintings that don't fit her models. For example, in her discussion of the School of Athens, which the author argues almost solely depicts greeks, she does not discuss, much less attempt to identify, the turbaned figure which is part of the "Pythagoras" group. This figure is generally described by others as a depiction of the arab, Ibn Sina (Avicenna). Although discussing, and often criticizing, the attributions often given to some figures thought to represent portrits of contemporary figures in the guise of classical ones, she makes no comment as to whether the Heraclitus figure is a representation of Michelangelo. This seems to be the current consensus, as even the style in which this figure is painted appears to be an imitation (homage or parody) of Michelangelo's.

Overall, the author is given to making sweeping statements about a variety of issues, but unfortunately the utility of these judgments is undermined by weaknesses such as those noted above. The book has few (and small) color reproductions, and no pictorial "key" to the frescos, but does include a rather useless (and somewhat inaccurate) reproduction of a 19th century line drawing of the fresco...is short, save your money.

I used this book extensively for my research thesis on Raphael's Stanza della Segnatura frescoes in the Vatican - very thorough, interesting and illuminating piece of criticism. Highly recommend it!

About the Author
James Conolly holds the Canada Research Chair in Archaeology at Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. His research interests include landscape archaeology, quantitative methods and the origins of early agriculture. He is co-editor (with Sue Colledge) of Early Neolithic Agriculture in South West Asia and Europe (forthcoming).

Mark Lake is a lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. His research interests include early prehistory and evolutionary archaeology. He is a contributor to Handbook of Archaeological Sciences (forthcoming) and a member of the editorial board of World Archaeology.

Good for folks that are just starting GIS

This book covers some fundamentals in GIS and archaeology. It goes from case study to case study, illustrating how someone could use GIS for their own sites. It's an okay read but for those of you who already know GIS (even at an introductory level), pass this book on as there is little you can learn from it.

A new social psychology!

What makes something legitimate or not legitimate? Naturally the answer depends on where you live. What is legitimate in one country is often not in another. This, as well as many other issues, makes legitimacy a very difficult thing to define and to grasp.
This book gives you an understaning of legitimacy and from a lot of angles. Leading researchers in sociology, psychology, political science, and organizational behavior, all contributed to this book and the themes they cover are overlapping and mutually informative.
One of the great things about this book is that the authors of the various sections are not philosophers, they are researchers. This means here that their opinions are backed up with corresponding studies, not just endless theorizing.
The book starts with a summary of what will follow, then a section on the historical perspectives on legitimacy. The historical section offers a brief overview of what the author considers to be the best books on the topic over hundreds of years. Lots of excellent condensed information.
The book continues with sections on "Congnitive and perceptual processes in the appraisal of legitimacy", "The tolerance of injustice: implications for self and society", "Stereotyping, ideology, and the legitimation of inequality", and "institional and organizational processes of legitimation."
There is really far too much to talk about, so I'll mention a couple of my favorite findings from the book. First, tokenism (allowing a small number of a discriminated against minority to move up in society) actually helps to keep the group that is discriminated against down. Why is this so? There are many issues, one is that the token identifies himself with the higher status group and no longer with the lower status group. That means he or she is more unlikely to care about the plite of his or her "former" discriminated against group. Another reason is that the existence of tokens actually makes legitimate the higher status of the upper group in the minds of both the favored and the discriminated against groups. One of the great things about this book is that this is not just theory, it is born out in scientific tests.
Another point I found outstanding was: what is legitimate to most people? The answer is usually something is legitimate if people feel that it is right. For example, if a process is believed to be fair (or right), people will believe it is legitimate. There are many interesting reasons for this which the book talks about.
"The Psychology of Legitimacy" contains fascinating insight, studies, and excellent theory all in one place. More importantly, it is about a topic so important and far reaching that it applies to literally everyone everywhere.

That's barely 3 stars...

Essentially an anthology of journal articles from the field of applied linguistics, this book reads like all of those harrowing college texts we were assigned.
In any medium, and for every communication goal, there is a "best" way to communicate. This book doesn't get close. There are some good bits hidden in there, like the baby corn in an otherwise unpalateable salad bar, but overall it's not a huge thrill to wade through it in search of them. It's not worthless, just nowhere near as efficient at communicating its message as it could be.

On second thought, let me give that 2 stars...

I wrote the first review of this book above, but after more consideration, I'm downgrading it to 2 stars.

This book is obviously an attempt to legitimize the TESOL field by the use of lofty language and faux-scholarly writing. TESOL instructors want to be taken seriously, as practitioners of a profession like law, medicine, etc., so they're trying to puff themselves up in the eyes of potential TESOL teachers (like myself).

Often it becomes quite comic. Here's a quote:

"Krashen (1982) claimed that 'comprehensible input' was a necessary condition for language learning...further development from the learner's current stage of language knowledge can only be achieved by the learner 'comprehending' language that contains linguistic items..."

In other words, in order to learn a new language, you have to understand it, and in order to learn more, you have to understand more...

Words of wisdom from on high! Holy crap...talk about disguising the obvious in a cloak of jargon and didactic fog! The book is full of gems like the one I just quoted. Yes, there are some useful little pieces of information peppered throughout the book, but it's so clear that the authors were in effect saying "please, please, take us seriously! We're professionals! We want to be respected! We want you to look up to us! Teaching language is sooooooo amazingly complicated! Oh, you pathetic little potential teachers would be lost without our wisdom."

Current, Accurate, and Concise

I found this book to be a great addition to my TESOL collection. Short, accurate chapters on all or most issues relevant to the TESOL world today are written by some of the field's most distinguished scholars.

I read that some reviewers found the terms and writing style to be pretentious jargon, however, I don't think these reviewers give the TESOL field its due. Academic language is part of being a scholar.

He has co-edited (with Zoltan Barany) Russian Politics (2001), Ethnic Politics after Communism (2005) and Is Democracy Exportable? (2009). His articles have appeared in World Politics, Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Electoral Studies and Post-Soviet Affairs.

THE BEST UPDATE ON RUSSIA'S TRANSITION TO DEMOCRATIZATION

The editors and contributors to the book are the leading scholars in their respective fields. If I could give six stars to it instead of five, I would. To the question "What went wrong in Russia" the contributors critically evaluate a number of most frequently mentioned explanations, such as state crisis, Russia's troubled asymmetrical federalism, economic reforms, elections.
The book as of today presents the best update on the subject. I personally used it as one of the primary sources for my A exam.
