This volume draws together ten important essays which use a variety of approaches and materials to explore the significance of sexuality in Shakespeare's work. Some consider the erotic effect of Shakespeare's language; others are concerned with expressions of desire (male, female, inter-racial, homosexual and heterosexual) in performance as well as text. Many are reprinted from Shakespeare Survey. They are introduced by Ann Thompson's survey of the topic in recent criticism, and conclude with a new essay by Celia Daileader on nudity in Shakespeare films.

Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher

In most major universities one of the three or four basic first-year graduate mathematics courses is algebraic topology. This introductory text is suitable for use in a course on the subject or for self-study, featuring broad coverage and a readable exposition, with many examples and exercises. The four main chapters present the basics: fundamental group and covering spaces, homology and cohomology, higher homotopy groups, and homotopy theory generally. The author emphasizes the geometric aspects of the subject, which helps students gain intuition. A unique feature is the inclusion of many optional topics not usually part of a first course due to time constraints: Bockstein and transfer homomorphisms, direct and inverse limits, H-spaces and Hopf algebras, the Brown representability theorem, the James reduced product, the Dold-Thom theorem, and Steenrod squares and powers.

Review
"Algebraic topoligy books that emphasize geometrical intuition usually have only a modest technical reach. Remarkably, Hatcher (Cornell Univ.) offers a highly geometrical treatment that neverheless matches the coverage of, e.g., Edwin Henry Spanier's very formidable and identically titled classic work... He promises two advanced companion volumes, one on spectral sequences, one on vector bundles. One anticipates the combined treatise doing for algebraic topology what Michael Spivak's magisterial five-volume set did for differential geometry." Choice

Mixed Feelings
By Rehan Dost
This book is intended as an "introduction to alegbraic topology" and I rated the book accordingly.

I found the book refreshing at points and thorougly frustrating at other points. This was one of the first book I approached when trying to learn formal algebraic topology. Prior to reading it I had indirect exposure to algebraic topology in application to physics especially when learning about differential forms where one is usually exposed to homology cohomology and derham cohomology, etc. I found the physics texts MUCH more instructive than this text which is supposed to be from the mathematicians perspective.

The book has it's merits:

1) it is organized well and attempts to relate the main topics in algebraic topolgy - homotopy and homology

2) it has many examples to help solidify the concept presented

3) it has plenty of exercises of varying difficulty.

4) it genuinely tries to motivate the mathematical ideas of algebraic topology.

However it has many faults. I was particulary disturbed by it's lack of definitions. At some point I felt like I was having a conversation or reading a "pop" math books for the dilettante not mathematician. I found myself repeatedly going back and having to REREAD THE TEXT to get the definition of some mathematical object. In my humble opinion a math text should clearly state definitions and properties and not try to "explain" them in prose without the preceding definitions.

The author also states minimal prerequisites ( algebra and point set topology ), however, it is clear alot more is needed.

Although there are plenty of examples, the author, simply states conclusions which maybe "self-evident" to someone with previous exposure to algebraic topology but not to a novice. In the examples little effort is made to explain the assertions.

Finally, the author has a chapter 0 which goes over some geometric preliminaries with little rigour, which to his credit he admits. However, he states that you do not really need to read it thru and only refer to it as needed when going over the text. The problems is all of the notions used in chapter 0 are ASSUMED TO BE KNOWN in the text. You have to know all the constructions, definitions and properties and access them from memory at a moment's notice to follow along the proofs and examples. That is not difficult to do but he doesnt present these notion in chapter 0 in a clear and efficient way. Again it is presented in "prose" format.

Regardless, I suggest you download the electronic version and read it for yourself. Google the author and the link will pop up.

I wanted to rate this book a B- but there was no 3.5 so I gave it a 3.

More Hand-Waving Than an Orchestra Conductor
By Linear Functional
In the TV series "Babylon 5" the Minbari had a saying: "Faith manages." If you are willing to take many small, some medium and a few very substantial details on faith, you will find Hatcher an agreeable fellow to hang out with in the pub and talk beer-coaster mathematics, you will be happy taking a picture as a proof, and you will have no qualms with tossing around words like "attach", "collapse", "twist", "embed", "identify", "glue" and so on as if making macaroni art.

To be sure, the book bills itself as being "geometrically flavored", which I've learned over the years is code amongst mathematicians for there being a lot of hand-waving prose that reads more like instructions for building a kite than the logical discourse of serious mathematics. Judging from other reviews, I think it's safe to say some folks really like that kind of approach. Professors often do, because they already know their stuff so the wand-waving doesn't bother them any more than it would bother the faculty at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. And what about students? I cannot prove it, but, I think many students go ga-ga for this book because so often Hatcher's style of proof is similar to that of an undergrad's: inconvenient details just "disappear" by the wayside if they're even brought up at all, and every other sentence features a leap in logic or an unremarked gap in reasoning that facilitates completion of an assignment by the deadline.

Some have said that this text reads like a pop science book, while others have said it is a supremely difficult read. Both charges are true for a simple reason: Treating hard concepts with fluff prose is bound to frustrate the more analytical reader who insists on understanding each nut and bolt in a mechanism. Hatcher's acolytes may counter that this is a book for mature students, so any gaps should be filled in by the reader along the way with pen and paper. I concede this, but only to a point. The gaps here are so numerous that, to fill them all in, a reader would need to spend a couple of days on each page. It is not realistic. Nevertheless this book seems to get a free ride with many reviewers, I think because it is offered for free. Whether this is a good book or a bad book depends on your background, what you hope to gain from it, how much time you have, and (if your available time is not measured in years) how willing you are to take many things on faith as you press forward through homology, cohomology and homotopy theory.

First, one semester of graduate-level algebra is not enough, you should take two. Otherwise, while you may be able to fool yourself into thinking you know what the hell is going on, you won't really have anything but a superficial grasp of the basics. Ignore this admonishment only if you enjoy applying chaos theory to your learning regimen.

Second, you better have a well-stocked library nearby, because as others have observed Hatcher rarely descends from his cloud city of lens spaces, mind-boggling torus knots and pathological horned spheres to answer the prayers of mortals to provide clear definitions of the terms he is using. Sometimes when the definition of a term is supplied (such as for "open simplex"), it will be immediately abused and applied to other things without comment that are not really the same thing (such as happens with "open simplex") -- thus causing countless hours of needless confusion.

Third: yes, the diagram is commutative. Believe it. It just is. Hatcher will not explain why, so make the best of it by turning it into a drinking game. The more shots you take, the easier things are to accept.

In terms of notation, if A is a subspace of X, Hatcher just assumes in Chapter 0 that you know what X/A is supposed to mean (the cryptic mutterings in the user-hostile language of CW complexes on page 8 don't help). It flummoxed me for a long while. The books I learned my point-set topology and modern algebra from did not prepare me for this "expanded" use of the notation usually reserved for quotient groups and the like. Munkres does not use it. Massey does not use it. No other topology text I got my hands on uses it. How did I figure it out? Wikipedia. Now that's just sad. Like I said earlier: one year of algebra won't necessarily prepare you for these routine abuses by the pros; you'll need two, or else tons of free time.

Now, there are usually a lot of examples in each section of the text, but only a small minority of them actually help illuminate the central concepts. Many are patholgical, being either extremely convoluted or torturously long-winded -- they usually can be safely skipped.

One specific gripe. The development of the Mayer-Vietoris sequence in homology is shoddy. It's then followed by Example 2.46, which is trivial and uncovers nothing new, and then Example 2.47, which is flimsy because it begins with the wisdom of the burning bush: "We can decompose the Klein bottle as the union of two Mobius bands glued together by a homeomorphism between their boundary circles." Oh really? (Cue clapping back-up chorus: "Well, ya gotta have faith...") That's the end of the "useful" examples at the Church of Hatcher on this important topic.

Another gripe. The write-up for delta-complexes is absolutely abominable. There is not a SINGLE EXAMPLE illustrating a delta-complex structure. No, the pictures on p. 102 don't cut it -- I'm talking about the definition as given at the bottom of p. 103. A delta-complex is a collection of maps, but never once is this idea explicitly developed.

A final gripe. The definition of the suspension of a map...? Anyone? Lip service is paid on page 9, but an explicit definition isn't actually in evidence. I have no bloody idea what "the quotient map of fx1" is supposed to mean. I can make a good guess, but it would only be a guess. Here's an idea for the 2nd edition, Allen: Sf([x,t]) := [f(x),t]. This is called an explicit definition, and if it had been included in the text it would have saved me half an hour of aggravation that, once again, only ended with Wikipedia.

But still, at the end of the day, even though it's often the case that when I add the details to a one page proof by Hatcher it becomes a five page proof (such as for Theorem 2.27 -- singular and simplicial homology groups of delta-complexes are isomorphic), I have to grant that Hatcher does leave just enough breadcrumbs to enable me to figure things out on my own if given enough time. I took one course that used this text and it was hell, but now I'm studying it on my own at a more leisurely pace. It's so worn from use it's falling apart. Another good thing about the book is that it doesn't muck up the gears with pervasive category theory, which in my opinion serves no use whatsoever at this level (and I swear it seems many books cram ad hoc category crapola into their treatments just for the sake of looking cool and sophisticated). My recommendation for a 2nd edition: throw out half of the "additional topics" and for the core material increase attention to detail by 50%. Oh, and rewrite Chapter 0 entirely. Less geometry, more algebra.

Excellent book for geometers
By Tom Braden
I have taught graduate algebraic topology courses three times from this book. My overall feeling is that, despite a few flaws, I have not seen another book I would rather use -- and I really wish this book had been around when I was learning the subject! I appreciate its very geometric style and the way it tries to get the reader to "see" the definitions of homology, homotopy, etc, before diving into the rigorous treatment. Many algebraic topology books I have seen are nearly example-free; they build the theory but don't show the reader how to do much with it. In contrast, Hatcher spends a lot of time, appropriately, on some of first really important examples in topology, such as surfaces and projective spaces. These investigations are continued in the exercises, which I feel are the best thing about this book. Many of them contain juicy examples which really show how the geometry and algebra interact.

On the minus side, I would agree with another reviewer that sometimes the rambling style, which works quite well in the introduction to a new concept, sometimes gets in the way when it's time to get down to precise definitions and theorems.

Review
'It is difficult to fault this excellent collection, which is very well edited and rich in detail and theoretical analysis.' Gerard Delanty, Global Review of Ethnopolitics

' ... this edited volume will be of much interest to those interested in contextualising and in thinking across the notions of universalism and cultural relativity. The contributors very eloquently make their case in their ethnographically varied articles, leaving the reader with plenty to think about and even, at times, reconsider their stances. This is definitely an edited volume worth reading.' Maria Gropas, Cambridge Anthropology Journal

'... this is a serious book that addresses important political issues and challenges the adequacy of the anthropological and legal concepts that impinge on them ... what this excellent book shows is that the standardized legal form that the international definition of rights has taken cannot easily accommodate the complex realities of the world as it is.' The Journal of The Royal Anthropological Institute

'the book shows clearly and accurately the pitfalls of the adoption of an essentialist view on 'culture'. Moreover, it points out eloquently that there is no unique theoretical model that can be sufficiently applied to nay claims over rights and culture across the global ... will assist and advance the discussion on the implementation of rights.' Mao's War against Nature: Politics and the Environment in Revolutionary China (Studies in Environment and History), by Judith Shapiro

In clear and compelling prose, Judith Shapiro relates the great, untold story of the devastating impact of Chinese politics on China's environment during the Mao years. Maoist China provides an example of extreme human interference in the natural world in an era in which human relationships were also unusually distorted. Under Mao, the traditional Chinese ideal of "harmony between heaven and humans" was abrogated in favor of Mao's insistence that "Man Must Conquer Nature." Mao and the Chinese Communist Party's "war" to bend the physical world to human will often had disastrous consequences both for human beings and the natural environment. Mao's War Against Nature argues that the abuse of people and the abuse of nature are often linked. Shapiro's account, told in part through the voices of average Chinese citizens and officials who lived through and participated in some of the destructive campaigns, is both eye-opening and heartbreaking. Judith Shapiro teaches environmental politics at American University in Washington, DC. She is co-author, with Liang Heng, of several well known books on China, including Son of the Revolution (Random House, 1984) and After the Nightmare (Knopf, 1986). She was one of the first Americans to work in China after the normalization of U.S.-China relations in 1979.

Amazon.com Review
Historians have well chronicled Mao Zedong's crimes against the people of China over his four decades of rule, but his crimes against the Chinese land have been less studied. Judith Shapiro, a historian at American University, tells that dark story with admirable thoroughness.

A central tenet of Maoist ideology was the rejection of both ancient Chinese tradition and modern Western science, both of which offered an ample store of evidence to suggest that rivers flow best when unimpeded, that biological diversity is a good and necessary thing. Instead, Mao Zedong insisted, the laws of historical materialism mandated that everything in creation be put into the service of the revolution: Forests had to be felled to make steel for China's industrial development, mountains had to be leveled to make room for agricultural fields, rivers had to be reversed in their courses to provide power and irrigation. Marshaling the people of China in campaigns to clear land and destroy grain-hungry birds, among other things, Mao remade the landscape in just a few years, ordering imperial-scale projects such as the Three Gorges Dam. His policies led to disaster, to deforestation, air and water pollution, and ultimately famine--but some of those policies are still in force.

Shapiro observes that Mao Zedong cannot be held entirely accountable for the destruction of China's land, water, and air; he had, after all, many willing deputies. Still, the political repression he put in place made resistance almost impossible--and even today, Shapiro writes in her impressive study of Mao's war on the environment, his actions have proved difficult to undo. "Until China confronts its uneasy Maoist legacy," the author concludes, "it may struggle fruitlessly to achieve a sustainable relationship with the natural world." --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Much has been written on the human suffering in China under Mao Zedong, and a growing literature has examined the environmental degradation of this period. In this unique and important study American University environmentalist Shapiro, co-author with Liang Heng of three previous books on China, combines the two themes. Her thesis is "that the abuse of people and nature are often interrelated," and that Mao's China is an extreme case of this connection. Under Mao, China was a place of fierce repression and constant mobilization of the "masses." Through the power of their will and obeisance to Mao, it was believed the masses would develop China. Nature, then, was the enemy to be conquered, but it was not the only one; anyone who disagreed with Mao was an enemy as well, and could be banished, imprisoned or killed. Thus, as Shapiro shows in finely crafted case studies, Mao launched a series of utopian mass development schemes tempered neither by scientific caution nor by democratic political opposition. As Mao ignored warnings on China's explosive population growth, deforestation projects and overuse and misuse of the land led to massive famine in the 1960s. Local practices were disregarded as Mao demanded the uniform application across China of questionable policies such as the forced growing of grain no matter what the local conditions. Through these and other similar schemes, by Mao's death in 1976 both nature and the masses were exhausted and ruined. Mao's most lasting legacy, Shapiro observes, may be a cynicism and disillusionment among the Chinese people that makes them suspicious of any public goals, including the environmental reclamation of China. (Apr.) Forecast: The author will promote this in Washington, D.C., New York and San Francisco, and with advertising in the Economist, Natural History, Atlantic Monthly and the New York Review of Books, this book should reach a hard-core audience interested in China, human rights and environmentalism.

From Scientific American
In China during the Mao years, Shapiro writes, "coercive state behavior such as forcible relocations and suppression of intellectual and political freedoms contributed directly to a wide range of environmental problems ranging from deforestation and desertification to ill-conceived engineering projects that degraded major river courses." Indeed, "few cases of environmental degradation so clearly reveal the human and environmental costs incurred when human beings, particularly those who determine policy, view themselves as living in an oppositional relationship to nature." Shapiro, who teaches environmental politics at American University in Washington, D.C., examines closely such disastrous Mao projects as the Three Gate Gorge Dam on the Yellow River and the devastation of agriculture through campaigns that imposed a uniform agricultural model on the entire country regardless of local conditions. China's environmental problems continue today, 25 years after Mao's death, although Shapiro sees some "apparently serious efforts" by the central government to deal with them. She also sees the possibility that "a government may yet evolve that is environmentally responsible and responsive."

Mao's War Against Nature
By Obsolete
Book was much appreciated. Useful for a specific research project; well written but could have had more detail, which would be difficult given the enormity of the subject. Appears to be the only reference on this issue. Would recommend it to anyone interested in one of the more insidious sides of Mao's campaigns.

Fascinating
By TC
This is an interesting book, and it is one that explores a theme that many ecologists and students of Asian anthropology have missed - namely the ecological destruction of Mao's China and the far reaching social consequences of this destruction. Judith Shapiro does an excellent job of documenting and exploring those aspects of government policy that wreaked absolute havoc on the environment in China under Mao's rule. This book is well written and well organized. What Judith Shapiro did not explore, and what I hoped she would - are the historical foundations of Mao's anthropocentric worldview - which are firmly rooted in Marxist ideology. In fact, ecological destruction in communist countries is commonplace - it stems from the inability of Marxist ideology to interpret the environment in anything other than purely exploitative, economic terms. Within this context, Mao's policies were not an aberration. I would have liked to see Judith Shapiro dig deeper into this realm.

A Tragi-Comedy of Eco-Errors
By Richard Reese (author of Understanding Sustainability)
When I was young, I discovered pictures from China, where the streets were filled with people riding bicycles. I was overwhelmed by this display of human intelligence. Had they learned from our mistakes and taken a higher path, or had their culture taught them to respect life? I was living in Kalamazoo, where the streets were a nightmare, jammed with impatient nutjobs in speeding wheelchairs. The air was thick with methylene chloride, and the river was a PCB cesspool. If only our leaders were Chinese… sigh! Like I said, I was young.

In 1949, Mao Zedong led a revolution that overthrew the Chinese government. The victors created the People’s Republic of China, a communist state. China had suffered from a long era of exploitation by foreign powers. Mao was eager to create a prosperous industrial utopia as rapidly as possible, by any means necessary.

In 1972, Richard Nixon visited Mao and reestablished relations between the U.S. and China. Judith Shapiro was among the first Americans allowed to work there. She taught English. The outside world knew little about Red China, but Shapiro soon learned that the Maoist era had been a turbulent freak show. She described this period in her book, Mao’s War Against Nature.

Every environmental history book is a horror story, describing how clever humans survived by using technology and aggression to devour nonrenewable resources, deplete renewable resources, ravage ecosystems, and leave the bills for their children. Shapiro’s book stands out, because it examines an era of unbelievable ecocide. Maoist China repeated the classic mistakes of other civilizations, but in fast forward mode.

Mao’s high-speed modernization project was called the Great Leap Forward (1958-60). He wanted to produce more steel than Great Britain within 15 years. Peasants rapidly constructed several million primitive backyard furnaces. A hundred million people worked day and night melting tools, pots, and scrap into blobs of useless metal. Most of the furnaces were wood-fired, and deforestation was widespread. In those days, the peasants still believed the dream — that their heroic efforts would bring a new era with powerful tractors and railroads. They worked enthusiastically.

At the same time, there was a huge drive to increase grain production via bone-headed strategies. They were told that if they planted ten times as many seeds in a field, the yield would be ten times higher. Sadly, the densely grown plants rotted. But local leaders were deeply engaged in a competition to report astonishing gains in grain production, and their claims were far in excess of reality.

Because it would have been impossible to store all the grain reported, folks were ordered to make steel. The 1958 crop largely rotted in the fields, while the steel-making peasants consumed their grain reserves. In 1959, drought arrived, and the Great Famine began. Between 35 and 50 million died by 1961 — the biggest manmade famine in history.

The war on nature had another front, the Four Pests — rats, sparrows, flies, and mosquitoes. Sparrows were an enemy of the people because they ate too much grain. Schoolchildren ran around the countryside, destroying their nests and smashing their eggs. They banged pots whenever a sparrow landed. Before long, there were far fewer sparrows, and far more of the insects they used to eat. Farmers soon realized that sparrows were great allies. The birds were removed from the pest list, and replaced by bedbugs.

A core component of the Mao era was disregard for expertise. Mao hated intellectuals, scientists, and anyone else who questioned his fantasies. “Mao and his followers all too often fell into the trap of believing that because they declared something possible or true, it would be so.” Time-proven ideas were annoying superstitions that obstructed the fast lane to utopia. Knowledgeable people who voiced doubts about stupid ideas were promoted to exciting new careers in breaking rocks, exterminating forests, or worse.

When the president of Beijing University warned about the danger of rapid population growth, he was denounced and relieved of his responsibilities. Overpopulation could only be a problem in evil capitalist societies — never in a socialist paradise. China was already overpopulated in 1949, and it grew with spooky speed. Mao refused to believe the census numbers. In 1958, family planning programs were ended, and not resumed until 1971. Mao died in 1976, and in 1979, the one-child policy was implemented.

When a respected engineering professor at Qinghua University warned that the planned Sanmenxia dam on the Yellow River was stupid, and would promptly fill with silt, he was denounced and relieved of his responsibilities. The dam was built, and the reservoir filled with silt two years later, flooding a nearby town. Mao rushed to build thousands of dams, of which 2,976 had collapsed by 1980. Many were built with soil alone, by untrained peasants. Floods caused by two dam failures in 1975 killed an estimated 230,000 people.

Rubber was a strategic resource, and Mao did not want to rely on imports from capitalists. During the Cultural Revolution, hundreds of thousands of educated urban youths from bad families (i.e., intellectuals, rightists, capitalists) were shipped to the virgin rainforests north of Laos. This region was too far north for rubber, but the experts understood it was dangerous to protest. So, ancient forest was cleared, and planted with rubber. Much of it died during the winter of 1974-75. They replanted, and the trees died again. They replanted a third time, with the same result.

Looking at this era from the outside, it’s easy to see the foolishness. The only news the peasants got came from government sources — propaganda. The culture had a long tradition of obedience to superiors. Free speech and dissent were not cool. “Political campaigns so distorted human relationships that family members were driven to denounce and beat each other, neighbors spied on neighbors, schoolchildren drove teachers to suicide, and the world was turned upside down for countless millions.”

As I read, I couldn’t help but contemplate how foolish our own culture would appear to intelligent outsiders. How much of our news stream is truthful? What stories are missing? Why do we disregard the warnings of climate scientists? How can a “well-educated” population remain so ecologically illiterate? It’s 2015, the polar bears are dying, and the streets of Kalamazoo are still jammed with speeding wheelchairs. Why?

The Chinese were manipulated to pursue an ideology, and the program resulted in enormous environmental harm. It seems like consumer societies are manipulated via advertising and peer pressure to cause enormous harm via lifelong competition for status. We must continually acquire more impressive homes, cars, televisions, and on and on. A couple years ago, it was awesomely trendy to wear clothing printed with skull motifs. The following year, the skulls vanished, and the trend robots rushed to fill their wardrobes with the latest new fashions.

Anyway, Shapiro’s book is stunning. Mao is dead, and so is his ideology. The new game is the high speed pursuit of personal wealth. She mentions a few signs of hope, but it seems clear that the post-Mao era is causing far more environmental harm. The population is still growing. The pollution is horrendous. In every nation, the war on nature is winning. What would intelligent people do?

Understanding and predicting the behavior of decision makers when choosing among discrete goods has been one of the most fruitful areas of applied research over the past thirty years. An understanding of individual consumer behavior can lead to significant changes in product or service design, pricing strategy, distribution channel and communication strategy selection, as well as public welfare analysis. This book is a reference work dealing with the study and prediction of consumer choice behavior, concentrating on stated preference (SP) methods. It shows how SP methods can be implemented, from experimental design to econometric modeling. The book also presents an update of econometric approaches to choice modeling.

a long awaited guide
By A Customer
This book finally provides a comprehensive guide to designing and analysing choice experiments. (Probably a niche market). The authors (and W. Adamowicz, who contributes one chapter and is acknowledged in the inner title page) have been writing the book on choice experiments for many years, in the form of research papers. Until now readers have been left to guess at the intricacies of the mathematics used to construct the surveys, or set off in search of texts and papers on economics and statistical experimental design (particularly factorial design, which is not always well covered), or contact the authors directly. Finally it is all here in one place. This book explains the economics as well as the statistics. Examples are provided in transportation, environment and marketing. A great guide to understanding this area of social research.

Press Censorship in Jacobean England, by Cyndia Susan Clegg

This book examines the ways in which books were produced, read, and received during the reign of King James I. Cyndia Clegg contends that although the principal mechanisms for controlling the press altered little between 1558 and 1603, the actual practice of censorship under James I varied significantly from Elizabethan practice. The book combines historical analysis of documents with the reading of censored texts and will be an invaluable resource for scholars as well as historians.

Review
"...a remarkably comprehensive and up-to-date review... The writing is clear and concise, and the authors' enthusiasm for their subject material is obvious. This book will appeal to individuals from a number of disciplines and sub-disciplines who find soils interesting, including pedology, soil geomorphology, earth system science, environmental science, and Quaternary geology... it will be an excellent textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate level courses in soil geography, pedology, and geomorphology."
The Canadian Geographer

"This is a big book in size, concept, and ideas. The book is lavishly illustrated, with an extensive reference list providing the student reader with a ready gateway into the research literature. A large glossary of terms associated with both soils and geomorphology is also a welcome addition to the book. Each section is often approached in quite fresh and new ways.... wonderful."
Environmental Conservation

"This is a rare textbook: well-written, comprehensive, up-to-date, thought-provoking, and refreshingly opinionated. Schaetzl and Anderson took on an ambitious task in writing a textbook that not only covers pedology and soil geomorphology but also provides some of the necessary background in related areas of soil science. They have completed this task in admirable fashion. This text would probably be well-suited for any course in pedology or soil geomorphology, whether it is taught in a geography, geology, or soil science program. The basics are explained clearly enough for most undergraduate students. There is also a great deal of depth on many topics, which should satisfy advanced undergraduate or graduate students who seek a more thorough understanding of the material."
Joseph A. Mason, Department of Geography, University of Wisconsin-Madison

"The greatest strength of this text is that it offers a fresh look at soil genesis, blending a variety of concepts and paradigms of the science that are not traditionally addressed together. It serves as an excellent summary of pedogenic theory and should occupy the shelves of all pedologists and students of soil science. Likewise, it would serve as a very useful text fr other disciplines, particularly the field science such as ecology, geology, range management, forestry, and geomorphology."
Anthony O'Green, Vadose Zone Journal

An outstanding book on soils for amateurs and professionals alike
By Michael W. Wilpers
I am an adult student in a 13-course Natural History curriculim run by the local Audubon society and the USDA. Of all the soils books I have sampled, this one provides the greatest depth and range and seemingly endless new avenues for appreciation and discovery. It's a lifetime investment for a life-time of learning. The new price is very steep, so it's worth waiting for a used copy to become available at a reasonable price.

A long time coming!
By T. Jackson
This book was begging to be written for the longest time. Thank goodness Randy went ahead and did it. The book fills a void in soil science by linking soil formation and geomorphology, an obvious connection. It is well-written in terms of organization and style. I can tell that Randy certainly enjoys studying soils, as his enthusiasm pours off the pages. Not only that, but he and his co-author clearly have the knowledge and background to put forth such a work.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in soils, but especially for a college-level text book for any soils-related course.

High Bulk Density
By A Customer
This is a laudable first edition textbook in a field that has gone for some time without a satisfying reference. The subject matter is the science of how soils form in relation to geology and landform.

The subject matter is extremely dense but clearly and engagingly presented, and in a meaningful sequence. A background in soil science and mineralogy is helpful but not critical. Especially welcome are the tables that compile information and the graphs and diagrams that illustrate key concepts. There are no color plates as in other soils textbooks but I did not find this a glaring omission.

Although I am sure there are some weaknesses or omissions, I did appreciate the global perspective -- the authors are not bound to any one school of interpretation or classification system. The book is also very successful in providing the history of how this field of study developed and in depicting the contributions (and personalities) of the scientists who founded pedogenesis and geomorphorphology. However dry soil science may appear to non-specialists, it appears to be populated by colorful characters so it is nice to get a sense of that in a textbook.

A couple of topics are given short shrift in my opinion -- such as wetland formation and classification, the peneplain concept, and the utilization of advanced technologies (GIS, remote sensing) to advance analysis and landscape-scale applications. I also found the index inadequate in searching for topics of interest, having better luck with the table of contents.

This is an auspicious start for a much-needed reference that I hope will see future editions.
