This is a great beginning Latin book.
It appears to be the student book for a high school course. It assumes a teacher is involved. For example, there is nothing at all about pronunciation.
I'm an adult learning Latin on my own. I've studied several other languages. For me this book was perfect. It is a very gentle introduction to the grammar, but includes tons of interesting readings, each of which introduces new vocabulary. The readings are all about Roman culture, which is a great bonus.
The final chapter ends the story on a sad, even traumatic, note. It is about the people in the city all dying from the volcano in Pompeii. I'm glad this book is just for the first semester. It would be a downer way to end a school year.
I'm going to supplement this book series with the following other books:
- A great book for grammar is Latin to GCSE Part 1.
-- Wheelock's Latin: This is a very popular, traditional grammar book. I've heard many people like the older, more concise editions, so I bought an old 3rd edition: Latin: An Introductory Course Based on Ancient Authors, Including Readings
-- Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, Pars I: Familia Romana. This is a learn-by-reading approach. The book is entirely in Latin and starts assuming you know nothing. I plan to use this as supplementary reading practice. The audio accompanying audio resource is also great: Familia Romana: Latine Audio

Best beginner text offered at the local book store

I took a look through the 20 or so Latin books and dictionaries at my locals B&N book store. This one seems by far the strongest candidate for self-study (my intended use) - combining
a fairly attractive visual presentation with some interesting and easy-to-digest history/background information. Actually this is the only book I saw that I would consider buying. [I am thinking of learning a little Latin with my son, for fun and general education.]

I found this series, the 4th edition, to be especially informative because of the inclusion of history and culture of the time period, in English, as well as colour photographs.
As for the format of the book, I found it to be an easy read. Almost every stage begins with line drawings ("cartoons"), which introduces grammar, characters and sets the "stage" for what is to follow. Then there are a number of stories in each stage; proved for fun group quiz games (EUGE!). At the end of each story new vocabulary is included. Also there are vocabulary checklists, which you should know, at the end of the stage. Sometimes, the vocabulary at the end of the stories appears in the checklists further along in book. If this becomes a problem, my suggestion would be to make flashcards for each of the stages (proven study aid).
I do think that an improvement to later editions would be to include an English-Latin dictionary of the words used within the book, as well as pronunciation. Yet, nothing that an external English-Latin = Latin-English dictionary could not handle.
