Shields argues that the question of anger is the fundamental paradox in the emotional female/unemotional male stereotype: the stereotype of emotionality is female, but the stereotype of anger, a prototypic emotion, is male. Why is it that anger, which is so often portrayed as childish (peevish, irritable, testy, sullen, cranky, touchy, irked), and the essence of the apparently uncontrollable, irrational character of emotion, is masculine? Is there a difference (either conceptually or behaviorally) between masculine anger and the anger of immature tantrums? Is anger, in fact, viewed as emotionality when displayed or experienced by adult men? Stephanie A. Shields is Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies at The Pennsylvania State University. She served as Director of Women's Studies at the University of California, Davis and more recently at Penn State. Her research and numerous articles address the intersection of the psychology of emotion, the psychology of gender and feminist psychology. This is her first book.

About the Author
Stephanie A. Shields is Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies at Pennsylvania State University. She has been Director of Women's Studies both at the University of California, Davis, and at Pennsylvania State University, and was founding director of the Consortium for Women and Research at UCD. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and of the American Psychological Society and a charter member of the International Society for Research on Emotions. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on human emotion, the psychology of gendeR, and women in American Psychology. This is her first single-authored book.

Wonderful review of a little examined topic

Women are overwhelmingly stereotyped to be the "emotional sex" while men are thought to be "emotionally repressed". Do these stereotypes have any truth to them, and how do they effect our everyday lives? Shields has a wonderful writing style that makes this book accessible despite being packed dense with empirical findings. It's must reading for anybody interested in how Western culture uses emotion to define what's male and what's female. Both men and women should find it eye-opening. Highly recommended!

More than just a pretty cover.....

If you have the desire to learn what the professionals know about the complex topic of emotions, then you will find this to be a valuable book. Stephanie Shields shows how our Western culture influences how we 'do' emotion to the extent that it qualifies what is appropriate or inappropriate behavior for boys/men or girls/women. Shields did incredible leg work to research numerous studies and does a great job of interrelating previously learned information with her own findings and beliefs. Because Shields goes to great length to explain the technical jargon associated with research and psychology, this book can be enjoyed by both professionals and general readers. Undoubtedly, you will gain information about gender and emotions within the context of the Western culture, but ultimately learn something about yourself in the process. I highly recommend this book--it's a "good read".

Informative, Concise, Usefull

I wrote an essay about Deaf culture and the Sociolinguistics of Sign Language. Some basic searching on the internet lead me to this book. It contained all the information that I was looking for and then some. It outlined perfectly the points that I was trying to make in my paper, and helped me understand Deaf culture on a much deeper level.

My only complaint is that it's expensive. I wasn't able to afford buying the book online, however, I was able to borrow it from a local University Library.

Great book, big price tag.

About the Author
Harold J. Spaeth is a professor of political science at Michigan State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. He is author or co-author of sixteen books, including Stare Indecisis: The Alteration of Precedent on the Supreme Court, 1946 1992 with Saul Brenner, The Supreme Court and the Attitudinal Model Revisited with Jeffrey A. Segal, and Majority Rule or Minority Will with Jeffrey A. Segal. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Law and Courts section of the American Political Science Association and served as principal investigator of the United States Supreme Court Judicial Databases.

Jeffrey A. Segal (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is Political Science Department Chair and SUNY Distinguished Professor at Stony Brook University. He has recently been Senior Visiting Research Scholar at Princeton University and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow. He has also been Global Research Fellow at New York University's Hauser Global Law School Program and Fellow of the Law and Social Sciences Program at Northwestern University. He has worked with the U.S. Department of Labor, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the New York State Assembly. Segal is the author of eight books, including SENATE ELECTIONS (1992, with Alan Abramowitz) and ADVICE AND CONSENT: THE POLITICS OF JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS (2005, with Lee Epstein). He teaches undergraduate courses on American Government, Constitutional Law, Civil Liberties, and Supreme Court Decision Making. New Idea with Very Good Research to defend its claims

In Majority Rule or Minority Will, Harold Spaeth and Jeffrey Segal provide much needed empirical examination of the influence of precedent upon the decisions of Supreme Court Justices. The central question addressed by the authors is not whether justices are influenced by the decisions that were reached in previously decided cases, but whether this influence exists at a systematic and substantively meaningful level in the Supreme Court. There are three answers to this question. First, it could be found that justices are precedental by nature and follow the doctrine of stare decisis in all or nearly all of the cases in which it could be applied. Second, justices could be "legal moderates" in that precedent is an occasional influence upon their decisions, but other factors are often present. The final possible answer is that justices are preferential by nature and are rarely influenced by precedent.
In an effort to answer their question, the authors sought to examine the decisions of the justices in the progeny of established precedents. To complete this task in an appropriate manner, the authors used a sampling of major and minor decisions in which precedent was set. The author's sampled 100% of the cases with dissent from Elder Witt's list of "Major Decisions" from his Guide to the US Supreme Court (1990). The justify their use of these cases as they see Witt's list as more broad than others and the list has been employed by the authors in earlier research. So as to inquire if their findings would be generalizable, the authors also included a sampling of minor decisions of the Court. Sampling became necessary for the authors due to the amount of cases that the Court has decided that include dissent. While a pure random sample would prove unbalanced in that dissent rates vary greatly throughout the history of the court, the authors used a stratified random sample to find their data. Using the data of Epstein et al., the authors found three distinct periods within which to sample: 1793-1867, where dissents were issued less than 10 times per term; 1868-1936, where levels of dissent began to rise; and 1937 through the present, where high levels of dissent are common. In all, approximately 100 cases and their progeny were examined for each of the defined eras. Progeny was related to its particular precedent by the authors using two different sources. First, the authors examined the case syllabi for the cases that they used. Appearance in case syllabi was not the only determinant of precedent; the authors also relied upon Shepard's Citations for this data. In the end, the authors analyzed 2,425 votes and opinions cast by 77 justices in 1,206 progeny of 341 cases spanning from 1793-1995.
After analyzing their data, Spaeth and Segal found that justices do not heed precedent unless they are in previous agreement with it. In other words, justices who dissent from original opinions will rarely reverse their votes in subsequent progeny. The findings of the authors show that roughly 12% of justices will follow precedent, while 88% of justices will continue to decide cases according to their preferences. Therefore, the influence of precedent upon the justices of the Court is neither systematic, nor is it meaningful. These findings run counter to conventional wisdom and the legal model, which have often assumed that Supreme Court justices are inclined to follow previously established legal rules (precedent) even when they disagree with the precedents. The research here is well done and I recommend this book for anyone interested in precedent in the legal system or in political science.

Fascinating and Revolutionary

This is, no doubt, a very dangerous, yet enlightening, book. Much of the structure of our society is built on a foundation of moral beliefs. For instance, our whole political system is based on moral claims like the "inalienable" rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. In the Myth of Morality, Joyce takes the sword of reason and with it, utterly destroys those foundations (with great skill, I might add). Then, lest everything come crashing down, he proposes a very plausible alternative foundation: fictionalism. If we act *as if* moral claims - like the right to liberty - were true, then social confusion and disintegration are avoided. And in no way is doing this illegitimate: as Joyce explains, we have practical reason to do so, and as long as we all understand that morality is hogwash, there need be no deception in make-believe.

This book is much more comprehensive and convincing than its predecessor, Mackie's Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong (you might want to read the first few chapters of that book before reading Joyce, but thats not necessary). The basic idea is similar: there is something mystical about the property of "ought-not-be-doneness." But whereas Mackie argues directly from morality's mysticality to its error (anything mystical doesn't belong in our ontology), Joyce takes a more sophisticated route. His basic argument is as follows:

1. Moral claims apply regardless of your desires

(when we condemn a criminal, do we change our minds if we learn it was in his self-interest to commit it?)

2. If we morally ought to do something, we have a reason to do it.

(If we ask "why am I morally required to vote?", we couldn't take seriously someone who had no other response than "well you simply *musn't*!)

3. So, if we morally ought to do something, we have to have a reason to do it that applies regardless of our desires.

4. Such reasons don't make sense.

(this requires a complicated defense, and I won't attempt to summarize it)

5. Therefore, moral claims make no sense.

This argument, while not exactly a proof of morality's error, is rock-solid when bolstered by Joyce's formidable defense of it. He goes in depth examining premises 1 2 and 4 (the others don't need defending), and his fairness, carefulness, and rhetorical skill in doing so are nearly unmatched.

As if this weren't enough, Joyce provides a natural, evolutionary explanation for why we have morality, making morality's falseness all the more plausible. I was skeptical that morality could be explained naturally at first - isn't it entirely a social construction? But Joyce answered all the objections I could think of. The particular claims of morality may be explained by culture, but our disposition to make moral claims in the first place is natural.

Finally, Joyce goes on to examine fictionalism. This section was very enlightening. Before I had assumed that if something people think is true is actually false, well *obviously* we should just replace it with the truth. Not so, as Joyce explains. Its not just silliness to make-believe something as serious as morality. It might require a change of attitude, but we can pull this off, and its very important that we do so, in order to avoid giving in to our irrational habit of acting on present desires to the detriment of long-term ones.

My one complaint about this book is that it doesn't describe how exactly we might get from here to there. How can we switch the foundation of our society without it collapsing in the meantime? In fairness, though, this is a very tough question that perhaps deserves a book of its own. Overall, I can't recommend the Myth of Morality highly enough - it is philosophically rigorous while maintaining popular accessibility (at least to generally well educated people), and its implications are nothing less than earth-shattering. This book should be on the shelf of anyone who has any serious interest in moral issues.

Highly Persuasive

If you are already leaning towards an anti-realist position in ethics, this book will secure those leanings against any possible doubts. If you are a realist, well, you will have a lot of explaining to do after reading this book and should, for better or worse, take seriously to heart the arguments in this book. Joyce's main targets are the Moral Naturalists but he must also tackle the irrealists, e.g. the expressivists, in order to establish an error theory. One of the most interesting arguments draws from his take of the consequences of the evolution of morality. For more of his views on this, see his other book, "The Evolution of Morality."
I also recommend "The Moral Society" by Ian Hinckfuss, "Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong" by Mackie and if you have access to JSTOR or other online scholarly journals I suggest you read other fictionalists (some moral, some modal or mathematical) like Daniel Nolan, Mark Eli Kalderon, and Stephen Yablo.

The Best Book on Error Theory

This has got to be the best error theory book that I have read. Joyce is extremely persuasive, eloquent, and intelligent. The Myth of Morality focuses on the "problem" of categorical reasons... he gives a variety of arguments that show that they are impossible, and that our reasons depend on our desires and because morality is committed to the extistence of categorical reasons, it's systemically false. He does an excellent job arguing that morality is committed to categorical reasons, but I do not agree that morality does not exist. I also find that his solution of factionalism, which continues the use of moral language just in a new way, is completely unrealistic.

If you have a serious interest in morality, this is very well-constructed book. Although you, as I, may not agree with him, you will find that he does an excellent job arguing his points. I have read as well Richard Garner's Beyond Morality, Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong by J. L. Mackie [1991], and Ethical Intuitionism by Huemer.

About the Author
Mike Dentith is Professor of Geophysics at the University of Western Australia. He has been an active researcher and teacher of university level applied geophysics and geology for more than 20 years, and he also consults to the minerals industry. Professor Dentith's research interests include geophysical signatures of mineral deposits (about which he has edited two books), petrophysics and terrain scale analysis for exploration targeting using geophysical data. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Society of Exploration Geophysicists and Geological Society of Australia.

Stephen T. Mudge has worked as an exploration geophysicist in Australia for more than 35 years, and currently works as a consultant in his own company Vector Research. He has worked in many parts of the world and has participated in a number of new mineral discoveries. Mr Mudge has a keen interest in data processing techniques for mineral discovery and has produced several publications reporting new developments. About the Author
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was born in Konigsberg, Prussia, where he remained his entire life. His others works include Critique of Pure Reason and Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone.

Allen Wood is Ward W. and Pricilla B. Woods Professor at Stanford University. He was a John S. Guggenheim Fellow at the Free University in Berlin, and a national Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the University of Bonn. He developed parts of this book in the 2005 Isaiah Berlin Lectures at Oxford University. Along with Paul Guyer, Professor Wood is co-editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant and translator of the Critique of Pure Reason. He is the author or editor of a number of other works, mainly on Kant, Hegel and Karl Marx.

George di Giovanni is Professor of Philosophy at McGill University.

Imprescindible

Every serious scholar in Kant or Theology must owe this superb volume. It contains many unknown and important works in order to achieve a complete and accurate vision of Kant's moral theory and his philosophy of religion, as well as his whole system of philosophy, developed throughout the three Critiques. Kant himself delimited his philosophical project in the formulations of these three questions: "What can I know" --What I ought to do? and -What am I to expect? (CPR A 804/ B 832). Kant told that the last question, the theological one, was to be answer in "The religion within the limits of mere reason" of 1793 (AK 11: 414), a monumental work that makes clear several issues being somehow murky for the readers of the Groundwork and the Critique of the Pure reason, such as the value of the faith, the intelligible grounds of free will and the relation between morals and traditional religion.

The introduction favors thinking over solemn oaths

In addition to the content of what Kant wrote, the introduction in this book makes clear that the End of All Things as explained by Kant was a bitter satire. We hardly want to end everything however much the flashy bang gravy train may keep producing thermonuclear weapons and nuclear submarines. Many people have been thinking in ways that are far too complicated to be broken up into simple sentences for the benefit of readers who think of a series of simple assertions as a style to keep institutions functioning like a combination of God and God's own skew leaders.

This book is hard as all get-out. The content, especially for non-native Spanish speakers, is very difficult. But it undoubtedly helps you get a better grasp of Spanish and its intracacies. I highly recommend the book to anyone truly wanting to learn Spanish. It's not gonna be easy, but it'll be worth it.

Extremely well written and illustrated

It was a pure pleasure to read through Susan Woodford's book "Images of Myths in Classical Antiquity". If you've ever gone to an art exhibit and wondered how anyone could identify which myth the artist is painting or wondered what you're missing, this book is for you. In this book, the author describes how ancient Greek and Roman artists and artisans told "graphic "stories, something akin to "graphic novels" which have recently become quite popular.

The book also goes over the different myths and other stories commonly known to the Greeks and Roman, so that you can more easily recognize them when they show up. Although it becomes very clear early on that it takes a PhD course of study to really become an expert in this area, there are many basics that Woodford teaches that should immensely increase your appreciation and enjoyment of art from any age that makes use of Greek myths and legends. (Most of the gods and heroes and others depicted in Greek pottery are actually labeled! --I never knew that)

The text is extremely well written, containing 17 short themes in which she examines several specimens in depth. One prior reviewer makes a big deal about the black and white photography--he's missing the point. With almost 200 high quality illustrations and images of ancient Greek and Roman pottery and statuary, Woodford has put together a gorgeous book.

Mythology for Visual Learners

I really love this book! Although my interest in Greek pottery inspired me to order it, I have discovered that it is also an excellent way to learn and remember the associated myths. The author, Susan Woodford, has wonderful academic and professional credentials, yet the text is written in clear English. I feel very lucky to have stumbled onto her work.
