Ba, ha, mba!

This companion unfortunately does not make Byron's poetry more accessible to the beginner despite enlightnening moments among its textual criticism.
Any beginner to Byron's poetry would do better checking out the poetry itself along with companions to Romanticism and historical books for background reading.
This book unfortunately propagates a lot of myth and conjecture. It is said that it takes about 200 years for historical narration to be transformed from factual truth to fiction and myth. Byron's life and poetry suffers such a distortion into myth and fiction through the prevalent eyes of current scholarship. It is irritating to read the hashing and rehashing of supposedly objective conclusions, which in reality, are only fictional biographical conjectures.
Anybody with strong interest in Byron will find many of the lengthier works of all of the contributing scholars much more worthy of their time and study than this "condensed" sampling volume. McGann and Nicholson are exceptional scholars, others in this book like Peter Graham should be commended on their efforts to bring to light primary sources. The literary criticism ranges from excellent to acceptable in this book, as long as it keeps away from Freudian psychobabble and the modern slant of Byron's biography.
