Very Handy (and Easy to Use) Toolbox of Lesson Plans for Using Authentic Video in Your ESL/EFL Classroom

This is a very practical and interesting book for new and even more experienced ESL/EFL teachers. What I really like about this book is the introduction about the different video genres and what and what not to do, which I think is better than both Harmer's How to Teach English's and Scrivener's Learning Teaching's sections on using video. Using Authentic Video in the Classroom is more comprehensive and simply has many more lesson plans than the Harmer and Scrivener books, some of which are even cross-referenced with others, which I like very much. This book will help new and experienced teachers to really exploit the richness of videos available to them in a pedagogically sound and sensible manner, than just giving your students a movie day and simply talking about it. Using Authentic Video in the Classroom has many very focused and interesting lesson plans and teaching ideas as well as a generous number of helpful suggestions in the introduction, which will enrich your classroom. This book, in my opinion, is better than advertised, which is not always true when you buy a book on-line, because you don't know what you're getting until you have it in your hands and start reading it. The bottom line to me is that the students I have used these lesson plans with have all enjoyed them. I rate this book very highly. Enjoy reading and using it. I already have.

Inspiring and Practical

Jane Sherman offers explanations of the rationale behind using authentic video which are convincing even to the technologically resistant old guard. Classrooms are clearly enlivened and teaching can be rendered more effective with even simple applications of the ideas presented. A glance through the plethora of suggestions inspires the reader to imagine implementing the ideas as soon as possible and to dream up other ways to creatively use film to stimulate authentic communication among students. Sherman has gifted educators with a thorough treatment of ways to use film in the language classroom. I, for one, admit that my teaching is the better for having read and used it.
